ID Cards

I say no, for various reasons, a combination of civil liberties, and "It'll never work", as well as a "Why the hell do we need one anyway?"

Civil liberties?

What civil liberties would be infringed by carrying one?

Ahh, that's what they all say...

A compulsory ID card would make you a criminal if you left it at home. I'm feeling pretty infringed already.

i would'nt really mind one way or the other, but what would they be used for ? Would it be law to carry them ?. what sort of penalties would be doled out if you were asked to produce your card and it was beside your bed or something ?

The article says some people have already labelled it the entitlement card, does that mean that low earners or people on benefits might be discriminated against. Along with minorities who I think would be stopped quite a lot in this country.

Two things:

1)
Former Conservative cabinet minister Peter Lilley has pointed out that he considered the idea in the 1990s but rejected it after police said it would not help them.

2) They are going to call it an Entitlement card. Why is that I wonder?

I just can't see any positivies to having such a thing. And it'd piss me off if I couldn't get speedy NHS treatment if I'd left my card at home prior to having a nasty car accident. (I'd get treated but I can forsee no end of grief from the jobsworth administrative twats if people forget their card - "So sir, are you *really* who you say you are?").

I like this:
It was possible the cards would become no more of a guarantee against fraud than passports were against criminals in the 20th century

Strangely, ID cards were issued in this country whilst the Nazis were in power elsewhere, is that what you meant ?

Actually - I fully agree with their use during wartime. But during peacetime it's hardly worth it......

Waste of time and money.

I personally don't have a problem with carrying one personally. It'd just be another card in my wallet along with my credit cards and security tag to get into work.

If they go along with getting your finger print put on a little chip on the card then, by default your finger print would then be on a computer system so if you did forget your card, you could be ID'd on a fingerprint scanner so it shouldn't present too much of a problem in important circumstances (police, hospitals etc). Unless the emergency is that you had all your fingers chopped off.....!

I think it's a PC way of reducing the amount of illegal immigrants in the country. It seems anyone objects and they're shot down in flames for being cunts when a lot of them are speaking the truth.

If someone has a legitimate reason to be somewhere or be doing something then there shouldn't be a problem. But if you're in a country and fraudulantly (sp?) claiming benefits which MY hard earned cash is paying for, then I'm all up for putting a stop to that and kick their arse out of the country. If ID cards, at the very least, help with this, then I'm all for them.

One thing I am wondering about is the price that they are going to charge for it. It is an easy way to get some money.

If you can fraudulently get benefits how's an ID card supposed to stop them?

To get benefits in this country you need your national insurance number and have to go through a fucking barrage of checks and proofs of who you are. I can't even non-fraudulently claim benefits in this country because I hold a non-paying directorship. An ID card wouldn't affect this either way.

The police have already said that the ID card thing wouldn't help. I just can't see any real reason for it at all....

They say its not compulsory but as they said on the news this morning, banks and any transaction in the future may depend on it being shown, so it would be compulsory anyway by the back door.

Im not in favour of it and dont see any advantage over the NI number anyway in terms of receiving benefits or treatment.

If they do come up with a scheme it'll be a waste of money.

I'm undecided.
After the whole tracking proposals of last month I'm not sure I'm prepared to let them have it for fear that they are up to something more sinister.

However, if they could get them to be something more useful:
  • ID to get bank accounts on the spot
  • Passport
  • Anti Pensions/Benefits fraud
  • Voting ID.... secure online voting?
Then yes, I'd probably be prepared for it.

The problem is with regard to authoritative powers. In France, where they've had them for years you can be arrested if you can't prove your identity on the street.
If replicated over here it would allow racism - or at least damaging accusations of racism - to be let loose by individuals in autority to just pick on a minority because they feel like it.

Once again though, Labour have left us to just flounder around debating what it "might" do, rather than debating an actual, concrete proposal. I'm aware of how vague some of my points above are, but we have little or nothing to work on.

One main point, if it WASN'T compulsory then it's no use to anyone.

I'm saying no for now.

I think that they would be a useful tool for the running of the country, etc. The potential benifits are great, e.g. Entire Medical history on a Card, enforcing laws that are currently quite frankly a joke (mostly age restriction laws), passport, etc.

However I feel it would only be a matter of time before these cards were no doubt exploted for commercial purposes, which would frankly suck & is why I'm saying no.

Would anyone want a drugs company being able to get hold of there medical history? An airline able to get hold of the countries you visit? etc.

As for charging for it, bollocks to it if they do, if its going to be enforced, then they should foot the bill.

Would the government use your card to store what you bought, what you eat? Would they do this kind of thing?!

IS BIG BROTHER REALLY WATCHING US!!!

Heh I was just about to paste the same link Scouse. Certainly sounds like good reasoning - introduce a high-value identity card scheme (high-value meaning difficult to forge) and get a concommitant increase in identity fraud crime.

Once again the Reg is one of the few places to make commentary on an issue that's actually based on real experiences in other places instead of just conjecture.

I can see there being a lot of crime centered around them, especially with the amount of street crime atm, some sort of ID card crime will come along...

I dont have a problem with some of it, but there are many arguments against it, if they are doing it to stop immigrants why do they have to give it to someone who was born in this country ?

I dont want to have to carry a card around all the time, because anyone could nick it, and somehow get access to the data.

The register article is good also...

You don't have ID cards in the UK? Right... we do... good to use as ID in bars/clubs whatever and the electronic chip ones have other uses too,
