HALF-LIFE 2 SLIPS TO APRIL 2004: OFFICIAL!

Updated! Vivendi confirms our worst fears as the recent hacking debacle throws development into chaos. And the new date is...

Half-Life 2 will now officially not make it out before Christmas 2003, according to several reports on the Internet this morning. The reports, citing an announcement by Vivendi Universal, blame last week's damaging incident where hackers leaked developer Valve's source code onto the Internet. Half-Life 2 was originally due to release on September 30.

VUG CEO Christophe Ramboz went on the record to French pubclication Les Echos today, saying hackers stole around third of the code for the entire game although it would be "almost impossible" for this code to be made use of in an effective and damaging manner. The game is now set for release - wait for it - in April 2004 And that's at the earliest.

Without question the biggest game in the world right now, Half-Life 2's delay till 2004 is a massive blow for the industry in the run up to Christmas and will also strike fear into the hearts of competitors who have been doing everything in their power to keep their own FPSs well clear of Half-Life 2.

It seems this beta that was leaked is not specifically linked to the source code that was stolen. They released the beta version they had as a "why not?" because the source code had been leaked.

I'd guess it was something stolen from E3 as most people who've played it say that the most complete levels are the ones shown in the E3 vid and the rest are just crappy bits and pieces and missing textures.

Not suprised HL2 has slipped though, they need to wait that long for all the CS dweebs to stop playing with themselves at the thought of all those hacks devolved from the leaked source code.
The BarrysWorld condom idea of old would be most useful here. We were going to do green condoms and call them "Keyboard Protectors" instead.
