PARIS, Oct 7 (Reuters) - The theft of part of its source code has delayed until April 2004 the launch of "Half Life II", the hotly anticipated alien-hunting game of Vivendi Universal Games EAUG.PA V.N , a company official said.

"A third of the source code was stolen. It's serious because it forces us to delay the launch of the game by at least four months, that is to April 2004. Just the time to rewrite parts of the game," VU Games president of international operations Christophe Ramboz told daily Les Echos in its Tuesday edition.

I'd be very suprised if the code theft was the sole reason for the delay. April though? :/

I don't understand why they don't release it now, and then patch it up later. If it's complete that is. I think they're going to milk this stolen code business as much as possible.
I can't wait until April ffs. nnnggggg :(

Once again, Valve's estimate of the release date is wildly different to that given by Vivendi. I would say "Hey, Valve are developing the game, they should know", but that's what I said last time...

Yeah but Vivendi are the ones who are publishing it, surely they will have the final say.

Vivendi said it would be delayed months ago, looks as though they were right. Eveything Valve have said has been contradicted by Vivendi, Valve havent really provided much correct info yet.

Apparently this is the real deal, the porn and trojan files that were flying about were a few days ago.

Although not seen any reviews pop up yet, so it could still be fake.

Its all still rumours at the mo :)

Hi, I care so much, I think I might wait until I can get a real copy!

Obvious. No big deal. Every. Single. PC. Game. Gets. Leaked. It's hardly newsworthy, it's hardly surprising (especially given the high profile and guarenteed sales).

And cheers for getting the conversation started with such wise words of debate.

I can't stand threads that are created that are just a title. At least pose a question like, "What do you guys think the ramifications are of the beta being leaked in regards to cheating online?", rather than saying "er yeah leaked plsthxbye".

IMO. (Before I get savagely raped and banned by an angry mob not realising that I'm not telling someone to fuck off.)

its not the fucking beta
its some source code, that while in the hands of someone of vast know how might yeild some results, will never lead to a working build (unless someone bothers to write the rest of the content themselves).

Ermmm, its not the source. It is a beta, unless the screenshots and video i have are really good fakes.
But ive got better things do do than download it at the moment.

Half-Life 2 = April 2004? [October 07, 2003, 10:09 AM EDT] - 149 Comments
A couple of mainstream articles on the Half-Life 2 source code leak have appeared on New Scientist (thanks Mr.Skull) and CNET News.com (thanks Mike Martinez). Neither of those do much other than rehash the situation, but Vivendi's "Half Life II" game delayed by code theft on Reuters (thanks Brett Hopkins) has the first indications of how the fallout from this is impacting the game's release, (though this is not directly from Valve, so if the pattern that's been established continues, we expect this is not the last word on the topic). Here's the quote that suggests the new release date has been delayed until at least April 2004:

"A third of the source code was stolen. It's serious because it forces us to delay the launch of the game by at least four months, that is to April 2004. Just the time to rewrite parts of the game," VU Games president of international operations Christophe Ramboz told daily Les Echos in its Tuesday edition."

Update: Half-Life Source (ironically titled, under the circumstances) has their report based on visiting Valve saying that "only a SMALL PORTION" of the source has been stolen, and an email they attribute to "Mike Thompson who says he works for Vivendi Universal" saying "delay is not confirmed..." Did I mention this might not be the last word on this subject?
