On Half-Life 2 Delays [April 19, 2004, 09:14 am EDT] - Post a Comment
Half Life 2 may not make 2004 VGpro.com (thanks Voodoo Extreme and Planet Half-Life and Frans) has a quote from Valve's Gabe Newell taken from Polygon magazine reflecting their willingness to delay the release of Half-Life 2 as long as required to create the gameplay experience they are envisioning. He goes so far as to express a willingness to delay the game's release another year and spend another barrelful of money on the game:

"We've already spent millions into this project, and we're willing to spend as much as we need to make this the best first person experience ever. If that means delaying the game to 2005, we'll do it without any hesitation. If it means sinking another $20 million into the project, we can do it. Rest assured, if we delay the game, it'll be only to blow your socks off even more when it finally releases."

Oh well, Duke Nukem forever anyone?

This is fucking ridiculous (if true).

They KNOW it'll get to the point where nobody will give a fuck anymore, even the avid ginger, glasses wearing nerds who roleplay gordon freeman in their 4th year chemistry lessons.

Some would argue it's already passed that point. I'm near it for certain.

mmm vaporwear.

It might still work out fine, or it could be the next Daikatana..........

Although it always worries me when companies push their deadlines back by so much with excuses like "we want to make the best game ever" as that is just an excuse and these delays come from fundemental problems in the code and the design.... lets see if it makes it before 2006 now

Notice that this doesn't say the game is being delayed, it just says Valve is willing to delay it if necessary.

Place your bet :
most likely to be released first :

a) Duke Nukem Forever
b) HL2

at this rate I'll be playing Elite 4 before HL2

Rubbish. It'll sell in the millions regardless. Even if they delay it to 2006 it won't be a problem for them. Valve have made enough money from Half-Life and it's various iterations to plough millions into an advertising bonanza and push HL2 to the top of the games charts regardless.

I think Valve are well aware that a substandard release in the name of "getting it out soon" would do them far more damage than more delays and like Newell said, We've already spent millions into this project" which (despite his poor grammar) is spot on - why should they risk that massive investment when they can easily cover it for another 2 years if they need to?

Well if they do decide to delay it further i'd rather they didn't do shit like release the official box art - which could easily lead to the assumption it's out soon/on time.

It's like here's your game *yoink* Ahahahaha no you don't...aww go on then take it *yoink* ahahahaha fucktard No really this time take it go on *yoink*

You have to remember Half-Life 1 was practically scrapped and restarted when it neared it's original release date, so I don't doubt the valve are prepared to delay it further if it's not what they wanted it to be. It would have been nice if they stated this as their reason back in september though.

Funnily enough i have just bought a copy of PC Gamer, who allegedly have just returned from valve's HQ and have had a go on HL2

they didnt give a release date other than "Soon" and also stated that the review in this mag would be the last before the game was released

I'm getting increasingly bored of hearing about HL2. No real facts, just more speculation.

Fook off, get the job done and come back when it's ready.

In perspective

Bluesnews later posted

Update: Though many have tried to interpret this as a further delay announcement, it has been pointed out that this quote was made in reference to the game's delay in September 2003.

So alls well that ends well, still no sign of the game.

Of course it might be that Valve's recent system info survey has told them that there aren't enough 'top spec' machines out there to run the game in the first place ... hence another delay to ensure there's enough of a market for the game on release?

The screenshots I've seen don't look that much better than Far Cry. Though that's not necessarily an accurate comparison I wouldn't think HL2 is out of reach for current mainstream specs.

Great snippet :D

Being the suspicious old git that I am I do wonder if it is more marketing spin? You think? Can anyone get any real figures on what preorder figures are like for HL2?

There are plenty of other really good games to come out (or are out now), so I'm not too worried about it. UT2004 is taking up all my time now (move aside natural selection)

Well, it's already passed the point on me where I honestly couldn't give a toss about HL2 now, all I see is just *OVERHYPED*.

Judging from how far they are pushing it back i'm just waiting for Daikatana MK. II. :twak:

mmm bluenews post that announcement, and then later on updates pointing out that is what valve were saying on september 2003 ?

The box art work has been released and PC Gamer state they are the last magazine to play it at Valve head quarters...

Is it just me or does the bluesnews post sound like hype? Whipping us all up into a frenzy, because the way things are looking at the moment the release is just around the corner?

PCGamer did a spread about HL2 this month. They talked about it being released very soon then displayed all the same old same old screenies we've seen a thousand times before.

Given it was supposed to be completed last September me thinks this is pre-launch hype to get people buzzing about it again.
