I found going for the ultra realistic style incar drivers eye view is the best for this game... if everything else is super realistic why not drive from a realistic view :p

Stop waggling your stick - get a wheel.

OK OK ENOUGH ALREADY,

I've held off through 9 pages of this thread, you couldn't just let it lie could you??

It is now clear to me that I will have to buy this game, and a wheel to go with it.

With this in mind, a couple of questions to the experts (that means you Nath, Doomy)

Nath, in the in car video you posted the rev counter doesn't move and wing mirrors show nothing. Are these scalable options or is that the way it is in game?

Now, FF wheels; clearlythe way to go, but before I buy I need to know what to expect.

An FF wheel, in my imagination, should:

be most difficult to turn when the car is stationary, and not self centre.

start to self centre proportionally to the speed of the car.

lighten up with increased car speed.

suddenly go completely light when the car understeers.

Please tell me that this is what really happens, or I am going to be so disappointed.

BTW it may not be the absolute best wheel, but I think Ormorov suggested the Saitek R440. It also gets very good reviews elsewhere, and I can get it delivered from Aria for a whisker over £50. This seems pretty good value. Anyone have any better bets?

The rev counter and the mirrors work in game, but don't in the replays.

The FF works as you would hope it would. Indeed, I don't know how you can lap quickly without an FF wheel, as the FF feedback tells you what's going on with the wheels. It compares very favourably to real sportscar limit handling and feedback.

I'm using a fairly cheap logitech Formula Force GP and it's great.

I have all driving aids turned off, but use bonnet view. I can't stand not seen so much of the track.

As gumbo said - the rev/speedo doesn't work in replay mode but does in the full game. I think you can get it to work in the replay though, there's an option called replay fidelity - what you saw was "high" but there's also "max" which I've not tried. The higher you go, the more resources it takes up when recording.

edit: prepare to get very frustrated though - it's a fuckoff tough game.

throd - incar for sim mode all the way, bumpercam for arcade though.

Glad to have you onboard.... I would reconmend the DFP tho. Just because I have one and the feedback you want is delivered in spades.

I've got a ~5 year old MS Sidewinder FF steering wheel, I'd be very interested to see how it differs from a DFP. I'm working on convincing my friend to get one for his copy of GT4 - if he does, I'll bring round GTR and try it on his pc :D

Yeah, I'd like a DFP, but too much other stuff at the moment means I can't really afford it :(

The Saitek will have to do I think.

Double posting ftw!

Right, bored of Donnington. In an elise on sim mode on SPA I get 2:51.409. How about everyone else?

Also - on that track, when driving over the bumpy curbs it seems to mess up my force feedback - jitters for the rest of the time I'm racing. Is that a bug, or just because the suspension doesn't like it? Plus, when I press esc and return to the garage - my FF seems to almost completely stop working, when I go racing again I only get the slightest feedback. I have to go to the options then click on the ff strength option to snap it back in to play. Anyone else get this?

Finally - I've been trying to find real track times of elises like the one we're driving in the game to compare but so far I'm coming up blank. Anyone know any sites that'd have this sort of info?

I managed 1.46 round donnington with a no FF wheel in the elise last night, Ive managed 1.42's round Barcelona in the Saalen.

Not tried Spa since I got the real game though, might give it a bash tonight if I get chance.

Is amazon the cheapest? I will order one too I think.

I will admit it, I downloaded a copy, TRIED to get it to run with all this starforce nightmare bollox turning CD drives off etc, which in turn knackered me machine a bit, but I seem to have sorted it... and have learnt my lesson for which I apologise profoundly!

When me proper copy arrives, will I find it won't run due to residue from my attempted installation of el dodgy copy?

Cheers dudes ;)

Not sure - I thought about downloading it and attempting to go through all the hassle of haxx0ring it. Couldn't be arsed, just bought it instead. One way you could find out is try the demo - that's starforce protected too. If it works, I imagine the full thing will work too.

Oh and I've not seen anywhere cheaper than Amazon.

There is a starforce removal tool on one of the discs..... Probably an idea to run that before installing, if it finds nowt away you go.

Ok this is really starting to frustrate me now - I drove out of the pit at about 15mph over a little bump on to the main track. This caused my wheel to judder for the rest of the time I drove on that track. Even when I stop completely, it still jitters back and forth. What makes me think it's a bug rather than realism is that when I select return to garage it keeps juddering. Gragh.
