Oh man, don't talk to me about shitness. I've been trying open practice in barcelona with an Elise. I fucking SUCK. Simulation mode with no game driving aids but TCS and ABS. I just can't do it right, lift off the accelerator too much in a turn - spin. Push down on the pedal too much in a turn - spin. Turn too hard - spin. Wrong gear - spin. Shift down before the revs have gotten sufficiently low - spin.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

OK, in the Elise, do not change down gears with any lock at all on the wheel when braking. You can turn a little when braking, indeed turning in with a little brake applied, known as trail braking, can be effective as weight is transferred to the front of the car aiding initial turn in.

If you shift down whilst on the brakes and turning you are likely to lock the rears with the engine braking, as they are unweighted, causing the spin.

In medium and higher speed corners with a mid engined, rear drive car, you must not jump off the gas mid corner, as this will cause a spin. basically as you jump off the throttle the weight again transfers over to the front wheels making them bite, and the weight of the engine that is behind you will want to come around in a pendulum effect making you face the way you have just come.

Be smooth, and remember to be slow in and fast out of the corners.

We ought to pick a track and a car and post some laps like Doomy did.

Can you do a quick idiots guide as to how to record it, cos it looks fantastic Doom, even if you do seem a little afraid to use all of the road on the exits :p

Man - after a good half an hour of screaming at the monitor in Simulation mode, arcade mode is a really nice relaxing break. It's still challenging (I'm doing speed demon mode) but it's like GTR giving you a nice warm hug after it's brutally made you its bitch.

edit: some real nice advice there Gumbo. It's astounding to think this is all replicated in the game.

Heh Gumbo - I DO worry about the size of the road im on but as I said the more laps I do the more wreckless I get. Usually resulting in throwing the car across the gravel into a wall.

I'll write a quick guide as to how the vidoes are done as soon as I can (IE when these relatives PC's are fixed :()

Right, I've decided I'm going to do it all on Speed Demon arcade mode until I feel comfortable then move up to Alien on Wheels (which will have less driving aids and more damage registry) and gradually move up to Sim. Either that or do Semi-Pro and flick on/off the aids as I see fit.

Fortunately when you go to Arcade mode it's still a good challenge - just as realistic/more so than GT4 and damn good fun so you don't feel like you're taking the easy way out too much :\

Lift off oversteer ftw!

MR cars corner beautifully most of the time, you can keep the power going smoothly and accelerate early without losing much stability. The Elise gets a little unstable when you hit the apex though, gotta watch that ;)

Man, knowing that all these funky things affect the game make me giddy with excitement but it's gunna take a long time before I'm skillful enough in sim mode to not be utterly frustrated each time I play :\

Now someone explain this to me - I've tried doing a lap of donnington in the elise on semi-pro and simulation modes. Both times I set the same driving assists - i.e. stability help, low TCS and ABS. On Simulation mode I can't get past about 3 courners - on semi-pro I can do a fairly reasonable lap, albeit a bit slow and careful. I thought that the difference between the modes was merely what default driving assists are available and what bits of the car you can edit. What else sets them apart because despite having them set up the same, simulation mode is faaaaaaar harder.

Remember to get your tyres warm before attempting to go rather fast, it does make a big difference.

I have default simulation settings, apart from turning off the corner advice thingies. I think that means that I have ABS and traction control on low and also stability help on too. Whatever the defaults are anyway.

I lap Donny in the Elise in regular low 1.46's, I don't know how that compares.

I haven't tried the other modes apart from simulation, Sim's just too much fun on it's own.

Video help - Piece of piss

Get Fraps. Demo limits you to 30 seconds record time so youll have to acquire it 'somehow', google helps for this :p.

Set the recording to halfsize in the video tab.

Load up Fraps and then GTR (or whatever game), get comfortable and start. The frame rate will plummet unless you have fairly decent specs (My vids where captured on a p4 3.3, X800XTPE and a gig of 3200.) so anyway, start recording with F9 (default key). When youre done, press F9 again.

All the vids will be stored in your fraps directory (you can change this) and be warned, the file sizes are enormous, I think my monza lap neared 800 megs.

For the actual video editing there are a few things you can use but for quickness and ease of use im gonna use bog standard Windows Movie Maker. Load it up, just down from the middle is a button that says Show Timeline, click it. Drag the movie you just made in Fraps to the collections bit in the middle of the screen, let it import, then drag it down to the video time line.

Thats more or less it. You can add a song to the video by dragging an mp3 like you did to the video (try and make sure its the same length as the video :)) and add Titles to the video by going to Tools > Titles and Credits, here you can play with a limited amount of effects in realtime, results will show on the video screen as you go along. Also by right clicking the timelinecomponents of your video you can make it fade out, fade in etc. Its really hard to go wrong really, just mess about.

Once you think youre done just go to file > save movie file, agree to all in defaults and save it to location of your choice.

Oh and yeah, a GTR forum would be nice. Near 8 pages on this thread shows interest :p

So how do you know when your tyres are adequately warmed up - just by the feel of it? And how do you warm them up, like F1 just zigzag slowly along the track?

I guess if you are racing do it on the warm up lap. Few wheel spins :D.

I say we try sim mode on default settings and see what laps we can get on Donington. 1.48 is my best atm, but since formatting my PC ive lost my settings for FF and i cant quite get the feel i like back.

I can dip into the mid 45's but low 46's for regular pace.

I'll try and record a demo if I can be arsed this evening.

Managed to get it down to 1:50.53 then spun out a couple of times on successive laps - smacked my fists on the table quite hard and they hurt now :S

It's so frustrating, if you ding your car you've gotta get it fixed but you can't go racing again you have to bloody go round again before you can start timing it again. I wish there was a rewind function that lets you try the corner again :\

Been doing Barca in the Lambo mostly (1:44 best). However I couldn't help just having a quick couple of laps at beating your time Doomy.

That was with someone talking to me at the time too, so not my best ever.

Ok, quick effort at a vid, it's really hard to drive with fraps running, and after I made this a mate pointed out, why don't I fraps the ingame replay... So next time...

Anyway, on Sim mode, about 8mb.

Nice lap. Nicer credits :p

Sockstuff that lap will be beaten tonight :)

Thats a point. I noticed the lap stuff gets stored in MoTeC. How do i replay say my fastest lap?

I think it automatically stores the fastest lap of any track in the replay section - however, if you've done it faster in another car, it'll probably wipe it.

After much in the way of screaming and hurting my fists and breaking a cheap old mouse that happened to be sitting with in my reach I managed to come up with this:

Donnington.jpg

Suffice to say I'm very chuffed and I'll be taking a break from GTR for the rest of the day :\

edit: LOL just watched your vid Gumbo, cheers :D

I've had to pack away my wheel for a couple of days as I have a few exams starting tomorrow. Will bring it out and try donington soon though.
Best of 1:42.8 on barcelona on sim without aids, getting faster all the time though as I sort out which lines are best :)

Man, finally getting good with the Elise on Donnington. I can go laps without spinning out - just trying to shave off milliseconds. However, I just thought *fuckit* and decided to go for a spin on Donn with a Modena.

I suck again :\

Not sure if its classed as assistance, or cheating or what, but I find it an awful lot easier to drive from bonnet cam view, not right on the nose, just from over the bonnet.

TBH, I havnt played it a great deal, but has anyone tried the Saleen? What a car.

Lets get together and have a bash, say Tuesday night?

Cmon, you know you want too. :)
