Yeah, I know what you mean. I've seen pictures and heard stories of what it was like during and directly after. Also, the old A Bridge Too Far movie is particularly harrowing imo, because I walk through this town every day.
What Pegasus must have gone through when they realized that the balls-up would not be rectified, and were counting their bullets out in ones and twos rather than clips when the panzers were coming up to the bridge is mind boggling.
I've been to Normandy too like I said, and standing on the grass looking across the dunes is just very very intense imo. I tried to imagine what it would be like to be in the landing craft and see the twinkle of the guns before you hear or see the pullets pinging but I just fail completely. I wonder in fact if you have time to count from seeing the spark of the shot to hearing a strike, or if you even see anything at such a moment other than that which is directly before you. Just can't fathom it
