As for cameras, anything will do tbh. You might look at the Canon 1100D. You don't need a macro lens unless you're doing truly tiny stuff. The proper definition of "macro" is that the image of the object will be physically bigger on the sensor than it is in real life and current crop sensors are 22.2 x 14.7 mm so any zoom lens with a decent minimum focus distance (MFD) should do. I don't know anything about current lens offerings but maybe the Canon EOS 1100D Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm IS II Lens is a good buy for £309. That lens can focus down to 30cm, which at 55mm will give you a pretty good sized image of anything down to a couple of cm's across.

This might all be a bit late if you've all ready started but the easiest way is probably to stick a big roll of paper on the wall above a table. That way you can tear the end off and pull more down when it inevitably gets scuffed. The paper will also curve where it drops down on to the table which will show up a lot less than a proper corner.

Photoshop has plenty of tools for removing colours like you want but for best results make life as easy as possible for yourself. Try and use a colour that won't appear on any of the things you photograph and/or that's similar to the backgrounds the photos will appear on. Light reflecting off the background onto the object can give it a colour cast too (another reason why a box isn't optimal, more sides for light to bounce off). A friend of mine runs a photography studio that specialises in product photography and they shoot virtually everything in front of a white background for that reason.

Camera nerds rejoice in a shower of nerdgasm.

Sony have done it. They've released two of the most innovative cameras ever in the form of full-frame mirrorless bodies called the Sony A7 and A7r. I've used the mirrorless platform for over a year now and I absolutely love the tiny, portable, compact and lightweight nature of the setup. Now, they've released two full-frame models - one with a 24 megapixel sensor and one with a 36 megapixel sensor.

This is what it looks like:

The beauty of this camera is that pretty much any legacy lens from any manufacturer can be mounted on this with an adapter, so there's a lot of the Canon guys who've been gagging to get their mits on the 36 megapixel Sony Exmor sensor coupled to their Canon TS-E lenses. Now they can. When the rumours were flying about a mirrorless full-frame, everyone was expecting at least a £2000+ price tag, but Sony have blown everyone away with a £1299 price point for the A7 and a £1699 price point for the A7r.

Here's a hands-on video:

I'd be interested to know what Tom thinks of the section from 13:51 about shooting video with it.

I hate them. Fine for self-shooting (my canal stuff for instance) but for proper telly they're normally used by people who don't have the first clue what they're doing. It's rather telling that the guy interviewed talks about an FS700, because they're awful to use as well.

In the US and it as Prime Sales day, ended up getting:

Fujifilm X-T10 Mirrorless Digital Camera Kit (Black) with XC16-50mm F3.5-5.6 and XC50-230mm F4.5-6.7 Lenses for $599

Which I think is an OK deal. Arrives Thursday so will get to play with it at the weekend.
