I don't see a 5d2 replacement and a high-mp full-frame body... that would be 4 ff bodies in the lineup at the same time, including the 5d3 and the 1dx. Madness I tells ya. Bring on that high-mp body though ffs. And the 200-400 f4!

There's a market for it.

(possibly NSFW, I saw a boob, tasteful boob though).

Yeah; compact, light, decently fast, new silent / fast autofocus motor and cheap. Ticks all the boxes, just need to see some sample images / resolution graphs which i expect will be good given it's a brand new prime.

I hope Canon expand their pancake range.

Edit: Looks like Canon's own MTF graphs demonstrate it to be better than their existing non-L 50mm primes (which are fecking awesome when stopped down to f/4.5 and beyond).

Yeah as someone who has the same 50mm in the comparison above it's brilliant at low aperture figures. Don't know what those graphs actually show though. Looks like it'll be good value for the quality. Just a shame I don't really have a calling for one :p

Compact primes are going to be great for those of us that want to travel lighter. A lot of the Pentax boys swear by a bag of three Pentax DA limited pancake - lightweight, compact and top quality. I think it's great Canon are giving us that option too - f/2.8 zooms are certainly not light when you're lugging them around NYC or Ben Lomond all day long.

Interesting D800 v 5D Mk3 review from an amateur enthusiast.

View: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuozUxh_tOU&list=FLJujaRW58LuvI9j_AQusU1A&index=1&feature=plpp_video

I still don't know what's best. Everything about the MK3 is awesome, bar the low ISO dynamic range. The video on the MK3 between aliasing and high ISO (on video) is just simply so much better than the D800, so it reigns king (imo..) as the perfect wedding camera where video is likely to be a requirement and high ISO is a must.

But then, landscapes with ultimate DR and resolution favour the D800 significantly.

I wish I could afford both.

36mp? pah, 41mp? piffling. What we need apparently is 50,000mp!

OK so only military use for now, but apparently coming to an early adopter near you soon. The idea is interesting, but how realistic can it be? Only the very best lenses make full use of the D800, and what must the file size be?

Off to New York again at the end of August and want to get some good pics this time. I was looking at getting a half decent camera, but no knowing that much about them.

I want to carry on as a hobby, nothing serious, but some of the threads on here have inspired me.

I was looking at ths to get

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-D...Optical/dp/B005K6WTSU/ref=dp_cp_ob_ce_title_0

Or this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-L...KU4W/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1340437268&sr=8-8

Any good, or can anyone recommend a decent entry level camera. Sorry if this has already been discussed on ths thread, but cant be arsed to trawl back through it

Cheers

I have a shocking hangover Ed, I will get my thoughts together and make a reasonable post later.

Quickly though, I've been to NYC to photograph it so can share some insights on equipment etc.

Yes, sorry.

To echo what Milou said, I'm a fan of these new mirrorless platforms both for size and portability. I'm personally looking at a Sony NEX 7 system, but always fancied the older generation one. It has a proper sized APS-C sensor (the same you'll find in most mid-range DSLRs) so the image quality is excellent and also very compact with interchangeable lenses. How about second hand?

... or the cheaper (but same sensor) NEX 3?

Here's a crop showing some cameras at higher ISO, you can see the NEX 3 keeps pace with a proper DSLR (in this case, the Canon EOS 7D costing ~£1000).

High ISO images on compacts are always contentious. For landscapes/travel/architecture, I never go above ISO400 (on a Panasonic GF2) and everything is peachy.

Edit: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/47682080/misc/400.jpg 2,000 x 2,000 image (usual size is 3,500 x 3.500). Panasonic GF2 with 45-175mm lens @ 175mm 1/500 @ f/5.6 ISO 400 hand-held. I used a small dab of Noise Ninja.
