I know, right? If I'd had my wits about me at all, I'd have taken care of things properly. My first pass was exactly that. Ah well.

Soooo, several dozen bounties later I have my Cobra Mk.III *almost* where I want it to be. I only need another 3.5M credits or so :)

While working on that, I was in an HRE site, basically just picking fights, dodging into the asteroid field and letting the pir8s sort my job out for me. after some -frankly- awesome flying time I'd made maybe 800K, flipped over to the nearby station, invested the cash in my Cobra which I had parked there, had a coffee and came back for more.

I was really cocky and full of myself after my recent successes, and was fantasizing about using shadowplay to record stuff. I mean, playing in the asteroid fields is just awesome fun and I can make it look like I'm really awesome and leet and stuff. That in mind, I came on a wing of three Pythons who were in a bit of a fracas with an Imperial Courier with some of his friends. I decided to pick off the Courier's mates as they were smaller -I'm in a Viper fighter for bounty hunting remember, and although it feels really butch it's basically a glass cannon- while the bigger ships took pot shots at each other. After I had disposed of the small fry, I'd be free to pick off the remaining larger, and hopefully damaged, ships.

Anyway you can guess where this is going...I failed to take out my chosen target in my first pass, and while turning got confused and strafed a Python. That wasn't really the plan, because now I had all the ships in my immediate slice of space quite annoyed with me, and the Courier and nearest of the three Pythons took off my shields before I could get into the relative cover of the asteroids. While running away I managed to take out the Cobra I'd initially strafed, so one down. That running-away-and-hiding plan I had as backup failed, as in a surprising display of coordination the remaining ships spread out and closed in on me from several directions as I was hiding behind a handy space rock trying to nurse my shields back to life. The Courier came in first and hit me with a beam laser forcing me to relocate to another asteroid which unfortunately let the Pythons see me before I could boost away. I had to turn to shoot at the Courier's remaining Eagle friend who was harassing me, and then the Pythons moved around the asteroid and I was toast. It only took the combined ships 10 seconds or so to kill me. I think the Courier got me in the drive, because I suddenly had no attitude controls and the computer started screaming just before I bought it.

Not played for ages, but some time off over Crimbo and Mrs Yuck working so will probably be firing this up again, just updating now.
I've got a full A class Cobra and plenty millions, was saving up for a Python. TBH I play with a HOTAS and can't remember my bindings so may have to do the training missions again or I could crash and burn on lift off
The new stuff looks interesting may have to splash some cash.

This is pretty much the only game I play these days - I loved the original Elite on the old 8 bit machines, so I've really loved this reboot... I've played and traded so I have several ships at my disposal tricked out for different roles depending on how I'm feeling...

I have a trade anaconda that's my most expensive ship - it won't stand up long in a fight, but has a cargo capacity of 450 T that can make some serious wedge relatively quickly... I have a clipper & courier as multi-role ships (the courier mainly used for smuggling across outposts), a Diamondback Explorer for, well, exploration and a Cobra MK III for nostalgia :)

Waiting for the Occulus Rift to be released just for this game...

Is there a Freddyshouse group that play this game regularly? Anyone tried Horizons yet?

There are some who play. Basically everyone in this thread!

Just now I picked up a mission to secure some black boxes after some trouble in the Kaptyn's Star system and deliver them to Sol. I had just been visiting Sol because after some random courier work I saw that I had ended up a short hop away. Clue being that I started recognizing star names I guess :)

Anyway, in my mind and for various reasons I had dubbed my most recent quest "Missions, Morals and Misery". I happened to be recording what went down. Anyone interested in me putting it up on my youtube? It's fairly raw atm, and 38 mins long. Some surprises pfft. At least, I was surprised

Earning about 2M / hour farming a high risk RES in PvE mode. Here's a vid of a 200K Anaconda bounty. Cheeky system security forces trying to jump in front of my lasers
Also, don't use Nvidia's December driver. It has the bad AIDS in Shadowplay. Really shite recordings were done :-/

Very nice.
Leverage some of the Powerplay bonuses and bounty hunting can return phenomenal payouts now.

WTF?!

I've not played in a year, bought horizons - my (rather excellent) Cobra MK III has disappeared, along with about a million credits. I've got a hauler, I'm in an unknown system, 6 tonnes of marine equipment and 1700 odd creds.

Has there been a wipe or something? WTF is going on?!! @TdC? @Exioce?!!!!!

  :(

Can't see my account having been compromised unless someone's brute-forced the password. It's got to be something Braben's lot has done.

But a little, yes.

Too much space whisky I reckon.
My account was fine after leaving it from April - December.

Going to try and start again this weekend now that I have got my PS4 controller working nicely on my PC.

Probably a bit heathen to use a console controller over a flightstick but meh.

So the "2.1 - Engineers" part of the Horizons season pass has been out for a couple of months now. They recently toned down the difficulty of this, with the component upgrades requiring fewer materials, and material gathering in general a bit easier. It was fiendishly grindy to begin with, but is absolutely fine now.
Materials can come from scouring planet surfaces in the SRV, ice mining, new mission types, signal sources and the like.

Engineers allow you to upgrade your components however you see fit, e.g. Frameshift drives can get longer ranges or faster spool-up times. Weapons can be configured as long range, short range, special ammo, efficient, sturdy, lightweight, overcharged etc. Shields can be specialised as more resistant, faster charging, higher capacity etc. Really enables you to customise your ship to your own play-style.
Basically a huge level cap increase, with months of tinkering available. The enemy AI received a correspondingly large boost.

October's update has just been announced and is looking good too, but plenty to do in-game until then!

I dabbled a while with it - really tried sticking to it. In the end, the result was the same.

The game is incredibly boring, and lacks proper mechanics and content. Feels like a sandbox.

Honestly?

It's still miles wide, 1 inch deep.

There is no actual content other than "do stuff to accumulate more credits" rinse and repeat.

So worth playing? I'm missing some space action.

imo not really deep as Urgat says. it's pretty enough (I have some gfx mods on mine) and I like to go exploring while listening to some music. very relaxing.

I'm shit at it. Can I get away with just pootling about with a PS4 pad? Avoid combat until I am comfortable, or is it punishing?

Lad at work is absolutely obsessed with ferrying passengers, does proper flight plans and stuff.

sure, I guess you could certainly do that. I know some peeps who play with pads exclusively. I'd recommend you do have a look at some of the guides on how to set up a pad properly though. Combat is as easy or as hard as you make it really. point there would be that to 'get gud' you would have to start doing it at some point. look up one of the more secure RES sites and prey on the harmless pirates. avoid any big ships or anyone above expert and you'll pick up the finesses quickly as well as some sweet monies :)
