Domain has been detagged - urgent advice greatfully appreciated!

Allo there. I registered a value host PRO account with supanames.co.uk in June 2001 which consisted of some hosting with a domain chucked in aswell. I registered illusional.co.uk.

In early 2003 I asked for the nameservers to be changed as I got better hosting. The account with supanames expired in June 2003 so I planned to wait for the domain itself to expire and I'd re-register immediately. For some reason they re-registered the domain without asking me, yet put it in my name and didnt charge me, but now have detagged it!!!

Anyway I'm better posting the emails I've sent to them so you get the idea about the rest! If you can help I'd be very grateful as surely they cant expect me to pay what they quote to retrieve the domain back? You'd be best reading from the bottom up :)

Thank you for the reply but the question remains, why did you detag it???

Please respond ASAP. How I'm expected to pay £100+ to get it back is beyond
me. It's very important I get this domain back and I find it unfair that you
re-register it then detag it without questioning me beforehand. I am looking
into the legality of this as we speak. You may well be able to do this but
obviously I have to find out for myself.

Please let me know why it was detagged.

Thanks,

Dave Hindmarsh

the .uk domain registrar, Nominet, the domain still remains in the
registrants ownership, and the old TAG holder (SupaNames) no longer has any
control over the domain or its nameservers. This means that you are still in
'charge' of your domain, however it is not currently pointing to anything.

need to contact Nominet directly at http://www.nic.uk and ask them to retag
the domain. Unless your new host are happy to pay the renewal fees you will
be asked by Nominet to renew this domain with them directly. This costs
about £80 + VAT. You will also need to pay Nominet the retagging fee of £15
+ VAT, even if your new host will pay the renewal fee.

release this domain from waiting. This will then become available to
register again. This can take upto 6 months or more.

You need to speak to your current hosts and see what they will offer you. Detagging means that the domain is currently in limbo. It hasn't been sold on, but it isn't actively in use either. Easier that way than going through Nominet if you can.

[edit] And this should really go in the Technical forum.;)

Cheers for the reply. Mods - move it if ya want :)

I'm hosted with www.creativesell.com. I have another domain with 123reg. Would it be worth me setting up a transfer to 123reg then paying nominet 15+ vat to re-tag it? I spose I'd have to pay 123reg to cover the renewal fees too.

Their latest reply, seems they are straight up in this case (unfortunately for me):

Dear Mr Hindmarsh,

This domain was not reregistered by us, as you did not renew this. This domain was detagged as it had not been renewed since it expired in June 2003. This domain was not detagged untill August 2003 resulting in you having approx 2 months worth of free hosting.

The detagging of the domain is in accordance with the Nominet rules which goven the .uk domain namespace as we did not recieve payment from yourself, therefore were unable to renew this domain with Nominet.

It is Nominet who keep the domain on hold in your name allowing you time to retag and renew the domain rather than putting the domain straight back onto the pool of available domains which means that someone else could register the domain before you get the chance to.

We did send out renewal reminders to you about renewing this domain, which you chose not to do. You may still be able to get this renewed at a lower cost by transfering the domain to a new host, and then asking them to pay the renewal fee, if they allow this then you should be able to contact Nominet and ask them to retag the domain to your new host, and let them know that your new host will pay the renewal fees. This will leave you with paying your new host their registration and hosting fees, and Nominet the £15 + VAT retagging fee.

If your new host can pay for the renewal fee for you, they will be able to do this at a reduced cost if they are a Nominet tag holder, as tag holders get a heavy discount on registration and renewal prices from Nominet, this is how SupaNames are able to offer hosting services with a domain name for as low as £13.99 per year.

It is not our intension to mislead you in this matter, it is the normal process for domain renewals to undergo when they have not been renewed before the expiry date.

If you have any further questions please email me at andy@supanames.co.uk

  1. Are they required by contract to inform you that the domain is shortly to expire?
  2. Did you receive any such notification?

3. Are they close enough to firebomb without too much hassle?

I find my life easier having all my domains with one host. I normally pay £20 for a domain transfer, and you will probably have to pay the retagging fee anyway.

I wouldn't bother fighting it, they seem to have done everything they are required to do, more hassle than its worth for £15 + VAT.

hmm, I'd be inclined to take their 89ppm dedicated hosting thingy. are there any others? I've only been looking at dutch ones till now and tbh they are quite harshly priced :/

From what I saw of fasthosts, there shared hosting stings you if you ever need extra bolt ons. There UKreg domain name service is imho very good though & if you e-mail them they'll probably do you a good deal on recovering your domain tug.

Since the domain isn't due for renewal until 2005 (because they re-registered it), you'll only have to pay the £15+VAT to re-tag it. Speak to whichever ISP you've decided to go with and they can do the whole procedure for you.

(I did it myself yesterday at work)
