Another badly flawed idea from a failing Government - again it will impose costs on the majority whilst the tiny minority who use their dogs as weapons will never buy it

There are plenty of existing dog laws they just arent enforced the same as most other New Labour laws like the mobile phone use while driving one.

There is no actual way to enforce this because there is no list of dog owners in the country so it will be up to people to opt in.

Most normal dog owners already have third party insurance because it comes as part of most dog health insurance policies.

...which is perfectly reasonable. The number of people I still see with phones in their ears oblivious to the actions of traffic around them is still quite large. While the dog law might be of dubious benefit, the driving/mobile phone one is perhaps not the best choice to illustrate the point.

Ah no - I would love to see the mobile phone law actually enforced - I just think producing a massive stream of un-enforceable laws is pretty stupid and done as a knee jerk reaction.

Do you have any idea how expensive and impractical a register of dog owners would be? Again only the law abiding ones would do it - it would again fail to tackle the irresponsible dog owners.

We actually have sufficient laws but the Police and CPS are unwilling to use them because they have other priorities - extra laws will not change this.

The Police could get most dangerous dogs off the streets very quickly if it was made a priority for them.

Actually I'd imagine it would cost a hell of a lot more to simply have a crackdown on dogs on the street, and it's a very short term solution.

Having a phased introduction of licences for pets and a register to control them would be a lot more sensible imo.

I have third party dog insurance. No way it should be compulsary though. It is a lot to pay out every month.

If you can afford it, it is worth while just to save having any silly vets bills, because dogs are damn expensive, and ours are all pedigree, and therefore are prone to certain problems. The insurance we have also covers kennel fee's flee and worming treatments and free quarterly checkups at the vet. Having said that, for four dogs we are paying just under £100 per month on insurance.

I dont like dogs but i cant see how they would police this until the dog had actually bitten someone. You cant have an insurance scheme without a registration scheme. As you would never be able to check that one was insured and another not.

They used to have dog licenses but got rid of them ... but to me it would be good to make some of the dog owners more responsible for their pets and the crap all over the place etc etc

Having worked as a postie and various other do to to door jobs i say a dam good idea.

You may like the idea of a dog in the garden scaring off people trying to enter your property, but dont go crying when you dont get your post or next door sues you cos it went for the little boy trying to get his ball.

Also restrictions on certain idiots having dogs is a good idea to boot, any dog is a short hop from a wild animal, as i discovered with a german shepard who went for me in the street once when i was small, no sign of an owner.....it was apparantly allowed to run free.

A whole claims culture would spring up for dogs as a result of this -'have you been menaced or bitten by a dog - Manbitesdog will work for you on no win no fee basis'.

People who do pay will end up paying extra to cover the chavs who dont buy insurance.

And in the end there will be no effect on the number bitten each year

Edit - Personally my dog has £3 million 3rd party insurance so it wont actually cost me more.

People get cats as a lazy option pet as they dont need looking after only feeding once a day. But then they let them out and inflict them on everyone else

I love my ferrets and rats and fish but i dont expect anyone else to or to put up with their crap or hunting ...
