My favourite example that we have to deal with is Construction Industry Scheme. It now runs on fine for this, fine for that, fine for something else, the base rate doesn't matter because they make thousands out of people if they forget to tick a box. Interesting concept since the scheme essentially exists only as a means to get tax out of workers in the construction industry.
On the flip side, we just registered one of our companies for VAT after meeting the threshold. The revenue then wrote to us saying "we're not doing your registration for 6 weeks and don't contact us until we do or there will be trouble".
