So was the dubbed engine noise part of some joke or did they genuinely think no one would notice?

Other then that i'm so getting Amazon Prime in December purely because of that show..

The dead celebs thing went on way too long.

Should have just killed him and rolled to film.

Other than that, OK top gear. But a little fatter.

On the whole I enjoyed it. The only thing it lacks is the Stig. I expect it will evolve over the years and hopefully any production creases will get ironed out. It's only the first season. I'm glad they got rid of the celebrity section. As someone said above that's the point I usually left the room for a tea break

The thing with that segment was, it was just a vehicle (no pun intended) for him to deliver those lines and they didn't even have the audience's laughter mixed in to Clarkson's commentary, which I'm sure they did for Top Gear.

Why would people need to know when to laugh? Canned laughter is the fail.

If it's a recording of the live audience's reaction as they watch the video in the studio, that's not what canned laughter is.

Same thing, why would you need to know if the audience found it funny?

It literally isn't the same thing. I don't need to know if the audience found it funny, I just thought the whole bit was very sterile with the driver saying something "american" and then Clarkson saying "lol wtf does that mean" about 6 times.

They had the guests in the studio on Top Gear though and Clarkson did the voiceover live with them sat right there so that's why we got the audience laughter as well. I guess they pre-record Clarkson's commentary now.

I find most people are so thrilled to be in the audience they will laugh at any shit.
It's a sort of collective obligation.
Went to see Bridget Jones...which was actually pretty good, but those people who laugh at ...everything!
I look at them , trying to figure out why they find the most purile set pieces so hilarious.
'Oh look at him..he looks like a stuffed panda'.
They are practically falling out of their seats..gasping for breath.

Unless they were on Chris Evans' Top Gear where they apparently had to pipe laughter in over the audio system.

Studio laughter is generally canned or heavily directed or in the very least mixed with canned laughter.

If people need to be told when it is suitable to laugh, then its probably not particularly funny.

Steve Berry on radio X this morning going on about it not being Clarkson / Hammond / May behind the wheel for a lot of the hypercar drifting sequences. He reckons that whilst they are all competent drivers, they aren't up to controlling cars with that much power that close to the edge.

I've got no idea what is involved in drifting something with 900BHP, but I've always just accepted without question that it is them in the track sequences as well as the road sequences.

Pretty sure there was some canned laughter in that episode. Some stuff hit high and disappeared too unnaturally.

That's called editing. You cut sections out and use audience laughter to cover the missing part.

Really?
Really?
You do know Coronation street has actors in it?
I'm sure they could have a go..most people could, but those huge controlled drifts are stunt drivers.

I bow to your superior knowledge.

And if you think Coronation Street is acting....

They were driving at that track; other journos were there that day including Chris Harris, and I remember reading comments about it because all the other journos were getting the crumbs while the trio got most of the day for themselves. Others may have done the drifting, but they did the hot laps.

Just watched episode 2 - it's the cocking about episode. Not much in the way of cars, still very enjoyable.

Watching it now. It's OK. Hasn't made me laugh out loud or anything.

Edit. In fact, I'm posting on FH :/

Ehhh second episode I didn't really like that much.
Was a bit 4/10 for me.

Seems to be hit or miss re: online feedback.
