How many people do you know who have had a cold or flu in the last 4 months? Thats how common it could be. And assuming you do get it, the death rate is around 50% so you're probably more likely to die from it that terrorism, sars or bse.
Tilda said:Hey, lets do some maths.
Died in terrorism last year: 625
Now for bird flu: WHO estimate of an infection rate of 25% (14.5 million people) and the current mortality rate of 51%, you get around 7.4 million UK deaths.
Which is a tad more that sars, bse and terrorism put together.
Tilda said:I dont understand what you mean by "get", 1 in 3 people will suffer cancer, however many will recover, it dosn't have an overall 50% death rate.
Similarly, cancer can be treated, however, there is no instant cure for bird flu even after it mutates you're talking atleast 6-8 months for a viable vaccine to be made in any significan quantites.
Tilda said:I'm not sure if you're just guessing about the reasonably healthy thing, but if you read the research papers, depending on how it mutates it can change its infection pattern from the old and the young, to a middle age range.
Tilda said:I'm not a pussy, and I dont go around worrying about what the next horific thing I might die of is. However the lack of any concern you show is worrying. What do you epect to do? carry on as if nothings happening?
They have banned it, I presume, to stop morally questionable stockpiling now with a view to sell for stupid prices if the pandemic breaks - which is a perfectly sensible thing to do (banning the retail, that is, not the buying for profit). It also means there will be more for authorities to buy in bulk and distribute to where it is needed (hospitals), instead of garages of ebayers.Trem said:Why would the Czechs ban the sale of it though?

DaGaffer said:The fact that people 'recover' from cancer is entirely besides the point. As a real public health threat it affects far more of us than hypothetical pandemics but it doesn't sell newspapers does it?
Rubber Bullets said:40,000,000 died in that pandemic, there have been 2 since, 2 million died in the next and 1 million in the last one in 1968-9. I can't help noticing a trend there.

right so if they dont write about it, it cant happen eh?Talyn said:I've been reading this - http://www.exitmundi.nl/
There's no mention of bird-flu yet... although I've not finished it yet either...

Personal beliefs also come into place if a loved one, mother, brother, relative, kid would die. I wouldn't feel sad. Ofcourse i would miss them from time to time, but i never have or will grieve death.
