It was on channel 4 last night..what a movie! Are all Japanese (or Chinese? Couldn't tell) movies that good?
Usually I can't get into films with subtitles, but it was awesome. I loved the whole KO count thing, telling you when people died, and how many children were left.
One thing I didn't get was at the beginning when the girl came out smiling, and they claimed she was the winner. Who was she?

Whats Battle Royale 2 like?

I wouldn't say all Japanese movies are that good :) but it's definetly a genre worth getting into.
As for the girl at the start she was just one of the previous winners of a Battle Royale, I guess that meant there had been at least 2 previously, what I never got was how the kids had never heard of this game if there was media and everything to meet that girl.
As for Battle Royale II it's not as good as the first one (that would be a tall order) some people hate it and others like it, I liked it myself.
The basic plot is Nanahara (he's the main boy in the first one) has become the leader of a terrorist group fighting against the adults and so a class is chosen to assault the island their holed up on, it's more of a war movie I would say, it has a few new twists but I would just say check it out and see what you think.

It's Japanese. The language sounds entirely different and it's full of school uniforms. Good film also. Bad DMW

This movie is class, i wasn't going to watch it because of the subtittles....but wow, i'm glad i did.

The best thing about it, is the guy who singed up "Just for fun" :p

Might see if i can find a copy of number 2 i can buy, aint seen it.

p.s...The kids are idiots, who didn't care about learning or anything so chances are they didn't watch the news so never heard of the BR law.

If you like BR I suggest checking out Series 7 The Contenders aswell. Very similar premise with tongue wedged firmly in cheek. I must warn you tho, it is American. So if you dislike American versions of foreign films simply on principle, simply because you might get kicked out your "WE HAET GEORG V BUSSH" fanclub, then it probably isn't the film for you. Everyone else should check it out tho, it really is rather good.

P.S. Also just seen Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas sober all the way through for the first time. My god, it's awesome!

According to my brother (and I know it's a cliché) the book is far better. You should check it out, it's really rather spiffy apparently.

edit^ Fear and loathing that is.

BR is very good and the amazon link appears to be the boxed 'tin' set thing which I have and is spiffing. Japanese films are not all like Battle Royale but there are plenty worth checking out and there is an awful lot of good film coming from Japanese directors. Compared with half the crap we deal with from Hollywood it's often a welcome change. Unfortunately most of these are so hard to get hold of for viewing in England via legal means anyway and to some extent via downloading... which is a pity.

Don't let subtitles put you off, it's far far better to watch a film and hear the original actors voices, you get to hear the emotion and appreciate the film fully rather than a studio dubbed thing from random voices who arent related to the actors at all, I know you have to read a lot of subs during a film but it's well worth it. Less effort than learning Japanese huh?

I wont recommend any films by title as I'm still exploring the Jap film area myself but two directors you may want to check out are Akira Kurosawa and Takashi Miike.

Kurosawa is appreciated by a few here at FHouse and has made arguably some of the highest rated films ever. Seven Samurai is an absolute gem of a film even though it's 50 years old it's brilliant. Definitely check that out and grab whatever of his others you can cause he was a fantastic director.

Miike is more extreme and generally makes Yakuza films, his films are all very good though and the fact they can be extreme sometimes adds to the enjoyment as you don't get the feeling of things being 'cut' or toned down as you do in some mainstream films. Latest film I've got of his is called Blues Harp and I enjoyed it... might be worth a try... it's not as extreme as most of his films but it's good..

IMDB is a good place to try and find out other good foreign films from any country and get the titles to things that sound nice to you, as well as many reviews... then you can work at finding the buggers ;)

I downloaded an .srt file with the subs, and then used vobsub to combine them (both filenames must be the same, thats what foxed me)

mmm pirating films........

:twak:

I've never taken a high moral ground regarding pirating of material, I accept that it happens, and I don't have a problem with it. I just wish others would be more honest (not aimed at you btw)

I missed BR the other night. Never seen it and caught 5 mnins where some girl knifed a guy in the scrote! Twice!

Downloaded it but as with Toms BR2, no subbies. Think I've just found them, so I'll play with vobsub tonight and see if I can get it working. Damn, wish I was at home now ;)

I'll recommend "Gonin" to the people reading this thread that seem to have had their eyes opened to foreign/eastern cinema for the first time. Saw it the other week and was most impressed. Very original and intriguing film.

HMV tend to sell a large portion of their "World cinema" section at around £10, which is pretty damn good for a highstreet store. Virgin do foreign films as well, and their Nottingham branch has a pretty good range, but stuff is mostly a bit more expensive in there.

Gonin was quite possibly the worst piece of film i've ever, ever seen.
