Been getting this all morning, seems its only me.

- My account is valid
- I am CE registered (have an R10 shaman)
- Password is correct
- Can login to Warhammer Online : Age of Reckoning
- Servers are up
- Other people are logging in ok.
- Removed user/cache and Interface folders
- Power Cycled PC

No response from GOA CS as yet on my issue, but hey maybe they are busy.

Am reinstalling the client from scratch atm in the small hope it will fix something but doubt it will.

Suspect its either an account issue or a network issue because the message window on the right says something about a timeout. But as the client can patch and I can see it downloading the server list with wireshark its not as simple as no route to host.

Teach me for taking time of work to play a game!

A new install of the client made 0 difference to the issue.

Update: In the connection log window, I get the following messages

Locating battles...
(dialog appears)
Response Timeout

A bit more info on this issue. Again, monitoring with wireshark, when its downloading the server list around the time it gives up (not sure if its before or after or during), I see a lot of

192.168.5.171:50131 > 80.12.199.22:8041 : ACK
80.12.199.22:8041 > 192.168.5.171:50131 : TCP Retransmission
192.168.5.171:50131 > 80.12.199.22:8041 : ACK (Duplicate)
80.12.199.22:8041 > 192.168.5.171:50131 : TCP Retransmission
192.168.5.171:50131 > 80.12.199.22:8041 : ACK (Duplicate)
80.12.199.22:8041 > 192.168.5.171:50131 : TCP Retransmission

and so on, until all connections are then closed.

Cold Started PC again.
Reset ADSL Router

Same issue. As other connection are not stalling, just this one, I can only imagine its an issue either with the client or the server or my account.

Mehuge,

our CS staff has been able to log in with your account without any problems, so there is no problem with your account.

I know you've tried on two computers. Could you post the specc of these?

Update: Turning off UAC does not correct the issue.

Hi Magnus. My main PC that have been playing fine with through beta and OB and HS yesterday:

Windows Vista Ultimate
Intel Core 2 Q6600
4.00 GB Ram
64 bit o/s
NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller

This PC was bought specifically to play WAR.

Second PC is the PC I started out in WAR beta with, a P4 3.4ghz with 2gig ram and a 6800 ultra. Its not too happy about the GFX at the moment, a driver issue, but the client gives the same Authentication Failed error dialog at what would be the server screen (if it had displayed properly).

I've tried everything I can think of, I am at a loss. Considered a system restore however the last ms update was on the 12th and its been working ok after that, its only this morning that it went wrong, and its not like I installed anything. I logged off last night, went to bed, got up this morning and got this issue.

Was there a patch this morning?

I even bought a SE pre-order and created a second account and that has the same issue, so it isn't account related.

I may try a system restore anyway but I don't expect it will help. I can also ask my ISP but as its only that one specific tcp connection going wrong I doubt they will be able or willing to help. The TCP retransmissions may be a red herring anyway, caused by the client crashing with the auth error.

I seems that after 14 months of beta testing, I wont be able to play @ release.

Sad Times

Magnus, I love you!

Did you have words with the Chaos gods and ask them to look favourably on me?

I have managed to login! And there was much rejoicing.

I was just chatting with a m8 on MSN and he said "ports", and I explained to him I had turned off the firewall. But then I thought, humm but I didnt actually try turning off my routers firewall - as I had done a power-cycle on the router I didn't think that would be necessary.

So anyway I tried it, and tried to login, and I am in.

Now I just need to work out if it was the router firewall all along (and if so what tweaks it needs, it should allow everything out, it was working yesterday, I will need to check to see if its lost some config or something).

Or was it simply a co-incidence and down to your influence with the gods of chaos.

Anyway - I need a WAR fix after my trials today - so I will test theories tomorrow. Atm the firewall is switched back on, so if it is indeed a problem with the firewall, I should hit the same problem the next time I connect, if I dont, then well, who knows what.

PS. Perhaps you could ask the chaos gods to look at the realm Q's again its a 57m Q atm :)

Anyway thanks Magnus and GOA CS, if it turns out to be my router FW playing up, then you can slap me around on IRC with a trout. If you fiddled with something to make it work, then my sincerest thanks.

Hey Mehuge,

glad to hear you're able to play now. The Lord of Change work in mysterious ways and he will bestow his gifts upon those worthy in often surprising ways. Your friend mentioning 'ports', inspiring you to try a new solution - coincidence or the work of the Lord? Only his most favoured champions are able to embrace the incomprehensible truth.

I'm seeing this problem now. I've been able to log on fine the past few days but have tried logging in today and get this problem. The program just hangs at the login screen at "Locating battles..." and if I tab out I see the error. I did manage to login at one point but the game was so laggy it was unplayable.

My setup:

Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit
Intel Core 2 6600
4.00 GB Ram

I also have had the problem with IP4 Checksum Offload, which was fixed by disabling it. All drivers and firmware (inc routers) up to date.

Well its back. Turning firewall off does not correct it.

During the day Mon-Fri my ISP is capping my connection. So sunday I was ok, Monday morning 10.30 am I was unable to login, was able to log back in at 8pm. This morning I was able to login at 8.30am, and been playing all day, but just crashed and I now get the same issue. Going to call my ISP.

ISP tells me the new capacity will be switched on on Thursday, so I should wait until then, see if it still happens.

I am guessing the authentication error is really because it cant download the server list because of the TCP connection failing during the day. Its weird that its only that 1 TCP connection that is affected though.

So up early tomorrow and fingers crossed that the client doesn't crash :) After tomorrow its not an urgent issue because I am back at work anyway.

Did the auth servers move location for the HS? It was fine in OB I think.

Hi again!
Sorry to hear the problem is back. I don't think the authentication servers has moved since we moved during the closed beta. Here's two possible solutions provided to me by the Customer Service team.

If you’re having trouble connecting to the WAR servers, it might be that your firewall is blocking the WAR client. If you are using the Windows firewall, this is how you can add an exception for the WAR client: Click on the Start button. Click on Control Panel. Depending on which Desktop Style you have chosen to use, follow the appropriate directions below: Windows XP default desktop: Click on Security Centre. Now click on Windows Firewall. Windows Classic desktop: Click on Windows Firewall. Please be sure that the radio button is set to on (recommended) and that there is no check in the box that says don't allow exceptions before continuing. Click the Exceptions tab. Click on the Add Programs Button. Click on the Browse button. Add the file warhammer.exe. Then click the Open button to add the file to the list. Click Ok. Click the Add Program Button again. Click Ok twice. Repeat this procedure for warpatch.exe and warpatch.bin.

Additionally you may need to configure your router settings to open the following ports
UDP port 1024-65535
TCP port 8040-8049
TCP port 10622

Also, here's a response by Cici from Mythic
The issue for the people getting the error [5] is a timeout issue. Retrieving the server list when there were just a few servers worked because you were getting less data back from our servers. Now, the list is much longer and we are returning much more information about each server. We have put in fixes to optimize this code and increase the timeout and it has worked for many people; however, it seems there is still a group of people that are having trouble. For the people who are still having issues, you should call your ISP to find out if there is a throttle or packet shaper that would prevent you from getting a certain amount of data at once.

Thanks again Magnus for the update. I get the sneaky fealing that it may well be a traffic shaping issue, or a poorly configured router somewhere. I am going to monitor the situation, try and gather evidence (packet traces) and submit them to my ISP if it continues.

I dropped my PPPoA/E (forget which) connection today hoping to get a different route, and after a couple times doing this I managed to connect. If I can pinpoint which gateway is causing the problem it will help the ISP resolve the issue.

I pretty sure its not a firewall issue anyway.

Same again today, started ~9am with occasional time-outs, come 9.30am its more or less permanent time-outs. Any ETA on when the increase in time out patch to the client will make it in?

Ive now got this problem as well-All was fine till this mornings patch, now I cant get past the "Locating Battles screen"

-My drivers and Direct X are all up to date
-My firewall and ports are correctly routed
-I was able to connect till this morning and can connect to other online games so I dont think there is a problem with my ISP (it is an unlimited use deal so it isnt capped).
-My system specs are fine as I have had the game running stabily and smoothly before.

This seems to be a common problem-I have spent several hours scouring the net and trying several "solutions" to no avail!!

Please help

Here is a packet trace of the connection to the auth server and game list. It starts ok, get past the authentication part (the first couple of packets is the authentication) and starts to DL the server list, but then the connection goes horribly wrong.

If Mythic would change the client to not bail (give the authentication failed error) if the server list cannot be downloaded when first logging in, the it can sit in its loop that it does not trying to get the server list and may eventually succeed.

That way we would probably eventually be able to get in-game. ATM its just about impossible to get in.

I think this might be a client issue. Other stuff handles the TCP retransmissions, and if I can get onto the server first thing in the morning, I can stay on the server all day long, but if I disconnect, I cannot get back on.

This taken form the Warhammer Alliance Forums:

To the guys having the authentication issue:
It is because your ISPs are traffic prioritizing/packet shaping.

Why this doesn't happen to me when i play other MMOs?
The thing is, your ISPs have added exceptions to traffic prioritizing for the ports of older MMO games such as WOW.
But because WAR just came out, you have to let your ISP know that he has to add an exception for the WAR ports too.

I think the ports are:
TCP port 8040-8049, 10500 - 10510 and 10622
UDP port 1024-65535
But i am not sure 100% if these are the only ones. In some forums i saw other numbers, and on the official page FAQ i saw other ports.
(I know for a fact that WAR uses 8040-8049 10622 on my machine)
Developers we need an official word on your official pages (USA EA and Oceania - not the forums) about the proper ports that your game uses so we can carry this information to our ISPs.

I am on a 2mb connection, but because of this traffic prioritizing i get the full treatment of an authentication exception and a huge lag (2-6 seconds to open the merchant/quest window, and the RvR is sometimes not playable)

************************************************** **
The temporary solution i used (found in this forum) is to use Proxifier/Your Freedom software to play the game.
Your Freedom: Proxifier

This way we are cheating and using the http port which is not limited by the traffic prioritizing. The bad thing is that there is a cap limit of 8Kbps ( if you want to use it for free)

But even with only 8Kbps i am able to always avoid the authentication exception, the lag on opeing a quest/merchant window is only 0.5 sec, and RvR is just fine
************************************************** *

So go on, call your ISPs and ask them to create an exception to the traffic prioritizing/packet shaping for the WAR ports.

I hope this helps, send your comments
Adieu

PS: My ISP just notified me that he has made the changes.
I'll let you know tonight how it went.

If i use a proxy, it works 100% fine - always get in but am limited to 8kb/s and an hour connection. Been on the phone to my ISP who have logged a fault and looking into it. Some chaps have posted on Plusnet forums and are apparently making changes. http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,68344.0.html

BTW my ISP is Nildram part of the Pipex network (i believe).

Thanks for the info. After having no problems yesterday evening I've not been able to get on at all since around lunchtime (and had a lot of lag in the hour or so I did play this morning). I've contacted my ISP (Demon) and we'll see what they do.

I'm having the same problems, I've registered an account and the key but still having authentication failed. Haven't even received confirmation emails either. Anyone know what to do? ;<

I'm having the same problem : Critical error; Authentication failed-application will now terminate.
Worked fine before today. Oh except for always having to queue twice everytime I play!

yep, and now me too.

I log in, it goes to the server screen, while I am still accepting the ULA and other thing that you have to accept, in the background I can see 'locating battles', then I get a windows critical error saying

'Authentication failed -- application will now terminate'

Thing is my bro is sitting right next to me playing WAR on the same lan, except he logged in 2 hours ago.

I played the open beta and early access till yesterday perfectly fine, funny, my bro says his is particularly laggy right now, and today was official opening day.

O and I have been trying now, maybe 10 times over last hour and did a full file check.

On a P4(hyperthreading) 3.6GHz -2GB ram, NVidia 7800.

I haven't contacted my ISP, and don't really intend to. ISP is BT.

My ISP is also BT, if that helps locate the problem.
