Marching is never going to stop/prevent a war outright, but it does show the strength of public feeling.
"Strength of public feeling" is such a vacant statement.
Both the large marches in recent times; the Countryside and the Anti-War, were merely collaberations of people with widely differing views, such dilution of opinion is useless and the whole event becomes synonymous with a pop concert, people just go to have fun amongst like-minded others.
There will always be large dissatisfaction with the government, few elections return a majority vote of over 60%, you only need an anti-government protest to take place and people will stream out, so no surprize there.
Large marches eventually boil the issues down so much it isn't really a protest against anything in particular, just an "expression of feeling" as you say - meaningless.
As a parallel example I'll point to the vast amount of sympathy directed towards the Queen Mum when she died, I saw the miles of people myself, but I'd be fooling myself to think every person in the queue was a monarchist and supported the Royal Family, they were just a bit sad that's all.
