Howdy.

I'm furnishing my flat and the walls are a little bare, figured I'd put some artwork on there but I'm totally uncultured so don't really know where to start - figured I'd see if any of you lot know any good artists to check out.

To give you an idea of what I'm after - muted tones, pretty dark/miserable stuff. Maybe abstract.

I've been looking at Rothko, Munch and Hopper and found a few things that I like but any other suggestions are appreciated.

Ta!

Won't be your cup of tea at all, but this guy lives near Canterbury, and I think his art is amazing.

I also think it's good investment material, and were I not internal organ selling on ebay poor, I'd buy some prints myself.

Well it's not what I'm going for but I do like it. I'm not really in to making an investment purchase though, I'm far too uncultured to appreciate anything with proper value. I just want a poster that I can put in a frame to make it look a bit less bedsity :).

Go for something that you like. I have a few of my Granddads works on my walls, he only ever sold them for charity but my mum found one in an art shop for about £100 so nothing amazing but they are priceless to me.

Mirrors ;)

For example a row of mirrors, small and square, at the top of the wall make it look really nice as it seems to continue on the other side.

Francis Bacon's version of Velazquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X 1953

About the Study after Velazquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X Painting
Francis Bacon often referred to other artists and used photographs as reference material for his paintings. This portrait is a distorted version of the Pope, from a painting by the Spanish artist Diego Velazquez that was painted in 1650. The scream of the Pope may also be referencing the famous painting by Edvard Munch, "The Scream".

It's quite interesting when you read about it. I went to see an exhibition on Francis Bacon a while back.

The yellow lines are white in some versions of the painting. I think he did a few versions of it. They signify a class case which is supposed to make you think he's trapped and draw your attention to what's inside aka the pope.

Also it adds to the fact he appears to be screaming. I cannot remember what the screaming part was used for.

Here is the original by Diego Velasquez (sp?)

Three flying ducks on a wall is all you need. If you're feeling post modern, use real ducks.
