The caveat to the statement in the article should have been " there is simply no place for young men to socialize online wihout young women that isn’t full of extremists.

There are plenty of places where young men are that aren't automatically hotbeds of incels and terrorists. The reality is that there are historically two male dominated subcultures, games and sports (with comic books a smaller niche) and while aspects of all three have developed a misogynist subculture (or indeed always had one) they are also developing entirely new (and enormous) inclusive subcultures where "girls are allowed" but amazingly boys and men can still socialise with each other within those groups.

Any sub-culture that is explicitly excluding women is by definition going to be a misogynist group, but also by definition, they're not the default place for young men to congregate anyway, because most boys don't think girls are icky or evil bitches. Incel stuff and "Bronys" (Jesus wept) are not mainstream, and not actually that large in real terms;

Gaming culture dominates the internet life of young males though and females get pushed off some of those platforms due to the culture. Sure, they can end up on friendlier platforms but that just reinforces the trend that some platforms become shorn of female voices to counter-act the drift to extremes.

Outside of gaming it's been noted for a while that there's a steady drift of men from the 'intellectual dark web' to 'manosphere' to bitter nasty fuck-ups.
