Well I just looked after a friend's house for a few days - happened to have a conversation before he went away (to England) about looking for a bag and he's come back with a Lowepro Stealth Reporter 300AW as recompense for the house-sitting. So um, I guess I don't need a bag anymore. :)

It's actually more than I was going to spend and it's helluva nice but I can't help feeling I'd rather have a backpack-style bag - he bought it in Jessops for cash and has given me the receipt and told me not to feel bad if I need to return it.. so we'll see.. :)

G, you mentioned Lee filters when talking about that Sigma wide-angle (iirc), if I want a UV filter just to protect the front element, any recommendations? It's the 17-55mm I'm thinking of, which takes 77mm filters.. the Hoya 77mm SHMC Pro-1 Digital UV Filter is a bestseller on WE, were you recommending Lee from an optical pov or do they just make good filters across the board? As an aside, I saw a feature on How it's Made on one of the doc channels about filters the other day and they were in a Lee factory. :)

I had a Hoya UV filter, it did a decent job for protecting the front element - if you're worried about damaging it then it's worthwhile purchasing. Personally, I don't use them.

The Lee filter system wouldn't provide you with a simple / cheap UV filter. The Lee filter system is reasonably complex and specialised. You need to purchase an adaptor ring for the lens, then the actual Lee kit itself that clips onto that adaptor ring. Additionally, you buy filters on top of that to slot into the Lee filter kit. It very quickly gets expensive.

That said, they're used by pros; so if they're good enough for pros, they're good enough for me. The filters are very, very good - optically and in terms of quality. They're not cheap, but they are perfectly neutral. I've never had a problem with and Lee filter I've bought - I've got four now.

When I was looking for a ten stop filter, I skimped on a ten stop 'square' filter by Hitech because of the ease of slotting it into the Lee filter holder. The filter only cost £45 instead of B+W's 10 stop filter at £85 and it was complete shite - the colour cast of the Hitech filter was a horrible orange / magenta affair. I returned it and bought the B+W.

I can't recommend Lee enough.

I'm shooting some Rugby at about 2000fps today. Should be fun. 1600mm lens too :)

Well you can see the ball deform when kicked, muscles in legs flex and move around while running, shirts being tugged, faces gouged. Its ace, although the depth of field was only about a metre or so as I was at f1.8, even in bright sunlight ;)

Hold the phone, my attention has turned to this exciting camera development - Pentax have commited to the 645D, a 31.4 MP medium format masterpiece, due early 2010. Rumour has it that it's weather sealed. Could be absolutely brilliant since it will be affordable for the very serious enthusiast.

Didn't it do well. And there's a firmware update for that problem. Don't get me wrong, I love the 50d and don't regret the decision at all but the 7d does look mighty good! :)

So it should for the money, it's still very-nearly-5D-MK2 money, £200 more than Nikon's D300s and £500 more than the Pentax K7. Still, awesome camera; shame the weathersealing isn't completely weathersealed (as per the 1D series or the Pentax K7), otherwise i'd consider a move to Canon (but to the 5D MK2).

This might be of interest to any hobbyists like me, Canon have a cashback scheme on at the moment, on both the 500D and the 450D. Sadly I bought my 450D at the beginning of this month before the offer started :(

Contact them anyway - they might make an exception, can't hurt to ask can it?

I haven't - with Hong Kong import places like that, you pay your money and take your chances. I had a fucking nightmare with Simply Electronics when I bought my latest DSLR; quite easily the cheapest place online, but they took my cash and the goods never showed up. Had to pursue them through the bank, got my money back (from the bank...) after three months.

I remember that thread. :(

Those prices are tempting though (lenses, batteries, extenders, extension tubes and grips ... Canon stuff basically) and they seem quite popular in this thread. :)

Although you do hear horror stories (like yours). :(

I wish lenses would drop in price so readily.

Me too, but they never do.

Is this because basically a camera body doesn't cost that much to make, but the initial high cost is mostly R&D, whereas good lenses tend to be expensive to make?

More likely because lenses are interchangeable.

I got my EOS 7D in December. Haven't had too much of a play but impressed so far with it. Tried out some portraits with lighting and some piccies in a lightbox so far along with having a go at the video mode.

Nice step up from my 350D no doubt.

Yeah I saw on another thread that you got the 7D Ono, after it's dropped in price a fair whack then it looks rather tempting indeed!

I almooooost wish I had held off for a few months but it was so hard to resist at the time and I never dreamed the 7D price would drop SO much SO fast. I would be PISSED if I had spent £1699 on one at launch though. :) (thanks G :D)

So you should just get one :) Although the prospect of starting from scratch lens-wise must be pretty daunting, but I guess they retain their value well don't they? So g'wan, become a Canon user. :)

My current lens commitment is the only thing stopping me, it would be a huge outlay just to switch systems for the autofocus. The only thing letting the K-7 down is its relatively 'poor' continuous autofocus speed. Whilst it's a huge improvement over the older models, the 7D has seriously upped the anté with it's dual digic 4 processors offering what you see in the video clip above. If the K-7 Mk2 or K-8 still has ropey AF-C, then Pentax can kiss me goodbye ;), but I think i'll hold out until then.

In terms of out and out image quality, there's very little indeed between the 7D, the 50D and the K-7 - the three key areas being RAW noise (fuck JPG :p), the 50D and K-7 image comparisons. A slight increase in resolution that's only obvious when you pixel peep at 100% crops, you'd never notice on A4 sized prints or probably even A3.

Got mine for £980 (body only) + 8gb card so a bit of a no-brainer. :kissit:
