i have to say, that after getting a 360 with a few games for chrimbo that:

gears of war is the best single player fps game I've ever played in terms of both graphics and gameplay, and the multiplayer probably scrapes into the top 5

rainbow 6 vegas is easily in the top 5 multiplayer games, though the graphics seem to be reduced in multiplayer from the single player, probably for performance reasons and the single player is very good, probably top 15 somewhere

Gears of war definately rocks. Best game I've played in a long while.

Only played a demo of R6 vegas, but it seemed pretty good. I've got it for the pc but ive not played it just yet.

This new year should be pretty good for games hopefully. No really good games out at the mo. 1st good one this year should be ut2007, cant wait for it :)

only to find out that they check your location via your ip so you won't get US online content anyways.

nice try though

Yeah really easy if you know someone who will let you gateway though there computer in america. If your average Joe and you do not know how to create a vpn your stuffed. And also if they use the same stuff as the WWE do even gate way ing dose not hide that you are in the UK.

They may be a much smarter way to do it but a vpn would be the easiest imo.

Ok, little thread update. Arstechnica took an trip to Microsoft to pit the PS3 and 360 head to head. Very interesting article that doesn't draw too many conclusions but does point out a glaring flaw in the PS3 graphics design. Have a look for yourself. 3 pages long so don't forget to click the links to read the whole thing ;)

It looks like they dropped a bollock there. the only part that gives you hope for the ps3 is this

"Graphics are a wash," Greenberg says, as we compare games. I have to agree; between the multiplatform games there just isn't a difference. I can't wait to see what Sony has coming down the line, but I get the uncomfortable feeling that they will always be a generation behind what the 360 has done. The question is whether or not developers will max out what the 360 can do and if PS3 will be able to pull ahead.

If they can sort upscaling within a year the ps3 might become the better consol.

Tried reading through got bored by file sizes and shit :)

My two pence, quit trying to pit the Wii against the Ps3 and the X-box as a like for like. As I have said before, Nintendo have created a machine that most people with either the ps3 or the X-box will buy anyway this is why it is a winner as long as they use their heads with regards to good game releases it will keep selling.

I would not put my money on Sony being able to drag back the lead the Wii has got over them, merely because I do not see normal 12-15 year olds being able to afford the damn thing :) When the X-box and the Wii are available at a much lower cost.

A lot more people out there nowadays are looking for fun with friends rather than sitting holed up on your own. The DS is a prime example it still selling like sex and drugs in Amsterdam. This is why I think Nintendo are onto a winner this time.

Have to agree with you i can't see the six axis controllers on the ps3 being anywhere near as much fun as the wii controls, (if they shipped with them)

PS3 will sell to people who like sony exclusive games and maybe for a year or so people looking for a blu ray player, as its the cheapest avalible.

Like i say to justify the high price i add up a xbox of the same spec and that playstations last 6 years i have spent alot more on a pc to play games that is already old technology a week later so i don't think its too bad :)

I think Chaod mentioned there is something for the 360 that lets you do this too.

Sorry I wasn't very clear.

A mate of mine got a wireless card for his xbox 360 and can stream media to his tv and it seems to work well, what i meant to ask was was this possible on the PS3?

The basic ps3 was originally touted as being a media pc for people who have network storage for media. Small local hard disk and the abilitie to stream media. So i would have though yes the PS3 can do this. But untill i have one i could not say for sure.

Erm for streaming I am honestly not sure but you can transfer files quite a few formats to the PS3 hard drive to directly play. If it doesn't support streaming at the moment I would imagine it is only a matter of time before it does.

Well I had been lead to believe that both core and premium PS3 supported many formats including DivX and Xvid but now after reading the following 2 pages I am not so sure, if not then I guess we either wait on Sony for a firmware/os upgrade or have to stream the media from a PC :(

http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/video/filetypes.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playstation_3

Oh and charging an extra £40 for the official HDMI cable takes the piss big time.

I though the same as the early specs for ps3 had full media capabilities but now it dose not look like it, i am hoping for a patch or maybe you get software with the remote?

I looks like if you can find a site with resonable UK delivery prices then accessories from the us will be best as i think its $45 for a controller and £40. Should get it for £30 delivered off the right site

i went for the xbox, i feel the wiis controllers are a novelty factor that will wear off, i cant imagine just beeing able to chil out to a game.

Decided the xbox over the ps3 because i cant justify spending over £500 on a games console right now, but i will probably buy a ps3 towards the end of 2008, with a small selection of games that ill keep a track of as the ps3 games collection rises.

Also, i figure the xbox360s a good choice coz its hd compatible, not that i have a hd tv but when the time comes i wont feel like im missing out if i had the wii. the thought of blu-ray with the ps3 is a cool thing, but im gunna wait for the price of technology to drop before i invest in a hd-dvd player or a blu-ray player and see which is the VICTOR!!!!! (most likely theyll just develop players that support both discs but thats cool).

so yeh i chose the xbox, im only gunna get about 10 games for it overall since i only usually play when im playing multiplayer, still havent ventured on to xbox live tho.

Ok time for another thread update ;

Found two very interesting articles this week. The first highlights the breaking news that even though only 1 million PS3 units shipped to North America so far it has failed to sell out. Many Best Buy stores have multiple PS3 boxes going unsold right across America and the same is being reported at other stores like Walmart across the country. This story is starting to be picked up by the mainstream press now as Sony having being playing the 'totally sold out' card these last 2 months.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070108-8574.html

Second story relates to comments by Mark Rein (one of the owners of developer Epic who made Gears of War) that there is no PC version of Gears on the horizon (well at least till the exclusivity deal expires next year ;) )despite the rumourmill going into overdrive when some Nvidia drivers referenced Gears of War in one of the config files. Personally I don't see Gears coming to PC till January 2008 so that Microsoft can milk the game on 360 for one more year when it goes in the £24.99 classic range, but that is just me speculating wildly ;)

I do not doubt the artical i would assume people are waiting for the rush to finish and for some better games to come out maybe? Who knows.

Make you laugh at yanks though why would you pay $2000 and over on flebay ect if shops have stock :)

John Carmack on PS3 development...

GI: You talked a lot about the Xbox 360. What are your thoughts on the PlayStation 3 now that you’ve had more time on it?

Carmack: We’ve got our PlayStation 3 dev kits, and we’ve got our code compiling on it. I do intend to do a simultaneous release on it. But the honest truth is that Microsoft dev tools are so much better than Sony’s. We expect to keep in mind the issues of bringing this up on the PlayStation 3. But we’re not going to do much until we’re at the point where we need to bring it up to spec on the PlayStation 3. We’ll probably do that two or three times during the major development schedule. It’s not something we’re going to try and keep in-step with us. None of my opinions have really changed on that. I think the decision to use an asymmetric CPU by Sony was a wrong one. There are aspects that could make it a winning decision, but they’re not helpful to the developers. If they make the developers say that Sony is going to own the main marketplace, let’s make them develop toward this and build it this way, it would somewhat downplay the benefits of the Xbox 360 and play to the PlayStation 3’s strengths. I suspect they’re not going to overwhelmingly crush the marketplace this time, which wasn’t clear a year ago. A lot of people were thinking it’s going to be a rerun of the last generation, and it’s now looking like it might not be. I’ve been pulling for Microsoft, because I think they’ve done a better job for development support, and I think they have made somewhat smarter decisions on the platform. It’s not like the PlayStation 3 is a piece of junk or anything. I was not a fan of the PlayStation 2 and the way its architecture was set up. With the PlayStation 3, it’s not even that it’s ugly--they just took a design decision that wasn’t the best from a development standpoint.

know what I would get cause I got it, and that was an xbox 360.

Still use my old Xbox as a mediacenter tho :)
