Would you answer the door late at night?

We live in a secure block of flats - security door, buzzers, etc. Saturday night someone was banging at the downstairs door really late, like close to midnight, and buzzing our buzzer like mad. I'm a very paranoid person, and tbqh I never ever answer the door unless I'm expecting someone. So we ignored it, cos the bf didn't really fancy answering it either. We just *assumed* it was drunk kids or something, because we have quite weird neighbours opposite - the police came round one time a few months back searching for a missing teenager and suspected she's hiding there, but that's another story for later on.

Anyways, cos we're hermits we didn't leave the flat till Tuesday morning to go to work and noticed the downstairs door has now been smashed. Glass everywhere, like someone's put their hand through to open it from the inside. But this is the tough glass, with the bits of wire in to make it virtually unbreakable. Nutters.

Now, the thing is, going back to the police visit, runaway girl etc, we think there's about 5 kids living in this flat opposite us, the hallway stinks of smoke all the time, theres always loud music, and their front door is covered in mud for some odd reason. And every so often they leave the downstairs door off the latch by stuffing ring pulls in the lock to keep it open, which makes us suspect they dont actually live there, since they have no keys.

Hmm, anyways, not quite sure why I waffled so much, I guess I just want peoples opinions on what to do. Call the police or call the company who manage the flats? We've had a couple of letters from the management company about various things that have happened - the stair carpet got disgustingly muddy, worn, and ripped away, fire exit signs been ripped from the walls, and they do know about the latch being left off so I guess someone else has already reported it.

So, input, opinions would be appreciated on how to approach the subject, but with caution, as I'm wary the kids finding out if we reported them, because for all we know, we could come home one day to find our door smashed in :/

I'm always wary of opening the door, although I can see outside from my bedroom in the current place and have 2 doors between us and the outside world.

In the last 2 places i've lived we've been in dodgier areas, my place before last was used as a drop off and delivery point for dodgy goods even whilst we were there and although we always got them returned to sender we occasionally had big scary men turning up to pick up the "misdelivered" items (200 mobile phones one time and once 20k work of jackets from america along with the import duty and delivery bill!!!!!). We used to keep a baseball bat next to the door in that place and in my last, although my last place had a steel door and frame as is used to be a shop which was reassuring!

I'm not usually that concerned, but late at night I do check especially if alone, although being a well built 6 foot tattood skinhead has it's advantages sometimes especially when my 16 stone metaller housemate is behind me in the corridor

I'd check before opening, usually by either looking throuhg my front room window, or shouting through the door.

By the way, about the flats you live in, you should be complaining about the state of the stairs/signs, and not waiting until you get a letter. That way, they can't charge you along with the other occupants for not taking care of a shared entrance.

Keep reporting the latch thing, and eventually the owners will perhaps change the locks, which would be useful if the people downstairs don't actually live there.

Well we rent the place so I'd imagine the landlord is charged anually for maintenance and things like that.

The letters we've received have just been general information ones like: "We've noticed the door is being left off the latch, please ensure you close it properly behind you" sort of thing.. In other words, making everyone aware that they know and hoping the culprits will stop it because they can't actually prove who it is. I know it's them because I've seen one of the kids do it one time on his way out as I was coming in.

And we don't have one of those spy holes on the door and are 3 floors up so can't ever see whos out there :(

once had a pissed up tramp at my door trying to get in to my house, its a pretty big detached place in a quiet road fuck knows what he was doing there but he wanted to come in and kept tryign to push i didnt even think to call the police i just picked up the cricket bad that is conviently by the dor with all the tennis rackets etc, he decided then it would be wise to leave, clever chap.

Im a big lad so unless someone is armed i dont really have much fear fo rmy own safety but if i was a regular dude or a bish id certainly think twoce about opening doors unless i knew who it was at night.

Anyone after about 2am banging on me door i let in - its always one of me mates badly pissed out of shape and usually they have usually done something wrong like for instance (true story) flipped an old renault 5 with 6 people in it trying to do a handbrake turn at the bottom of a rather steep hill (and believe me when i say he is a lot older than 17/18). The car didnt survive.
Before 2am and am i more wary to be honest ... although its bound to be more interesting than sitting watching the t.v opening the door to some knife wielding maniac in a hockey mask...so yeah i would open the door no matter what...

I doubt I would. Its either someone looking for trouble or looking for help and late at night I am not in the mood for either. :)

I wouldn't be that scared, tbh.

... But then, I'm 6 foot 4 and fairly well built.

... And live in an area with absolutely no crime.

man what a paranoid world we live in

9 times out of 10 it will be someone who needs HELP - even if it was 1 time out of 10 id still open the door every time because if someones knocking on a strangers house door for help they must really need it.

If its some dodgy bloke just grab the nearest broom/bat/small domestic animal and hit them or threaten etc...

I live on a uni campus with big three-floored apartment buildings. each floor has a pretty solid steel door, but anyone can get inside the building. since it's a student community a midnight buzzer maniac isn't all that uncommon so i just open the door if im awake and/or partially dressed. Every now and then we get the occasional homeless drunken person that's lying in the hallway for some warmth, but that's just good fun ;D.

As for the emergency arsenal I have this totally sweet telescopic baton I picked up in Prague on my interrail trip.

so I can easily decided wether to open or not, and if everything goes wrong I got my loyal baseball bat :twak:

A friend of mine had a really late night buzzer one night in his block of flates and the person buzzing wasnt discriminating, kept pressing like all the bells for all the flats. After about five minstues of this my friend, a real life stoner, got really pissed at the guy as he totally killed his buzz /karma. He went to the kitchen and took out a 6 inch carving knife and chased the guy down the road at 4am.
Two days later police came round to my mates house and informed him that the person he had chased had had his friend murdered down the road and he was looking for help as he has also been injured in the attack. The morale of the story? If someone knocks on your door at a late hour open the freakin door and maybe save someones life

Got one. And a battle-axe. They're displayed prominently in the hallway of my house, highly visible to whoever is menacing me at 2am.

Luckily, I can look out of the bedroom window and see who's at the door downstairs and, if necessary, climb out of the window and jump down on them from the porch roof :)
