Evaluation copy is included in the latest TechNet CD bundle. You might also be able to get hold of it from various Microsoft Partner companies, Solution Providers and training centres. It's also downloadable from the MSDN site, somewhere but I suspect you have to be an approved and registered MS developer.

I do have an (unconfirmed) link to a naughty site which I'm told has a downloadable copy but I'm not gonna post it here and I frankly wouldn't trust it on my Casio watch.

I bought Windows 98 and paid £20 for the 2nd Edition updates, and I got Windows 95(pre a) and Windows 95c with new computers if they count

You know the one it has lots of people flying around??

Is it just me or is this advert bulshit. It has no information in it whatsoever, just has some people flying around then the Microsoft XP Logo pops up.

What the f***??

Errr, who said it had to have information in it? Never saw you complaining about the shtie PS2 adverts with a stupid duck etc "The next place" or whatever, where's the info in that?

In fact, very few adverts contain 'information' about the product, why should MS have to be any different?

Whooa! Just had my first vaguely negative eXPerience. Heh.

Was rejigging my PCI cards, replaced sound card etc, as you do. Logged into XP and received a Product Activation error and XP reported that I need to Activate again to continue. If I said no, it logged me out. Shit, I thought, product key is stored in a text file on my HD (can't get at it) and at work (can't dial-in to get at it.)

Went through the Activation wizard anyway and it didn't even prompt for anything. Dialed up, connected and said OK, carry on.

Sweet.

Just thought I'd mention it.

That activation procedure will happen every time you mess about with hardware. Seems a bit anal to me.

Shouldn't happen if it doesn't need activating should it? :)

What are you talking about? Activation is here and it's likely to stay.

I don't have an OEM copy just yet. Any day now. ;)

It only happens once a certain number (3, I think) harware devices change. XP then suspects it's on a different PC and needs to check. No biggie.

Nah i meant that the copy i've got had the activiation taken out of it, was just wondering if its likely to popup again when i fiddle with hardware.

Unlikely. OEM versions (those supplied to manufacturors) legitimately don't have Activation. If you've got some h4><0red version then God knows what might happen.

seriously tho, I'd never do anything like that heh. I make jokes about it, because imo even a joke about cracking someones poota raises security awareness. It's so very easy to be [reasonably] safe that it's ridiculous how many ppl still are ignorant [and compromised].
A friend of mine told me he 'couldn't be arsed' to set up a firewall because it was 'too hard'. I scanned him and it turned out he had bo, elite and some other evil things. He even had shares that were visible from the internet fs. I offered to clean up his pc and install some stuff for him and while I was there I told him the best thing was a reinstall. He wouldn't let me cos everything was 'just right' as it was. Suuuuuure heh.
This got me mad, not at him tho, but at Chello our ISP. Surely they should implement some measures to protect their clients from the masses of scriptkiddiots? I mean, it's so friggin easy to block access to ports like 37337 at gateway/router/whatever level. With the budgets the broadband ISP's are operating with, surely a couple of traffic filters can be purchased? FS!

/end rant

I only installed my firewall (zonealarm) recently-ish. What can I use to scan for crap that might have appeared between my last windows install and installing zonealarm. I'm clueless about this sort of gubbins :)

very basic: type netstat -a in a dos-box and look for things that are 'listening' or 'established'. these are your services that are waiting for/holding a net connection. this basic check requires you to know what shouldn't be there tho.

less basic: dl a portscanner, install it, unplug your netconnex, shut off your firewall and scan yourself. the scanner should tell you aprox. what's happening on your system. alternatively you could have Steve Gibson do it for you or have me do it if you like :)
