There is a way, but the solution is worse than the problem. It involves removing certain visual effects which includes the transparent desktop icon labels.

WXperience.com says
During the Windows XP beta, you will see text in the lower right corner of the screen that says Windows XP Professional, Evaluation Copy. Build 2462 or similar. A lot of people would like to remove this text for some reason, and while it's possible to do so, the cure is more damaging than the problem, in my opinion. So the following step will remove this text, but you'll lose a lot of the nice graphical effects that come in Windows XP, such as the see-through icon text.

To remove the desktop version text, open Display Properties (right-click the desktop, then choose Properties) and navigate to the Desktop page. Click Customize Desktop and then choose the Web page in the resulting dialog. On this page, check the option titled Lock desktop items. Click OK to close the dialog, and then OK to close Display Properties. The text disappears. But now the rest of your system is really ugly. You can reverse the process by unchecking Lock desktop items.

UPDATE: There's also a shortcut for this process: Just right-click the desktop and choose Arrange by then Lock Web Icons on the Desktop.

Can I recommend TDC for his virus detection skills?
I let him 'probe' my network, and he detected a full diet of virii. Which I traced to a laptop. Two days later, it died - thank god it wasn't mine ;)

All secure now - so don't even think about it...

And the dozy flat-mate with the laptop is now running linux, so he's less likely to mess up my lovely network.

If you're interested, Radio 1 are 'reporting' on Windows XP at 5:45. Their soundbite is
Microsoft has upgraded Windows. But is it really worth it?
No doubt Radio 1 will tell us. ;)

There it goes! Nothing new. A summary:

[Microsoft are] paranoid. Anything new that appears they will stick in their operating system and say "use our operating system: it's better!"
Your PC is just a lump of plastic without an operating system to tell it what to do.
[XP is] supposed to stop your PC crashing all the time.

The ever-amusing Steve Ballmer was heard laughing his arse off saying that he's talking to authorities on both sides of the Atlantic.

Apparently industry watchdogs are 'chilled' and also mentions you need a powerful computer to run XP.

Sadly, Radio 1 decided to pepper their item with system sound effects from Windows 98.

They don't really compare to the end of an item on World Business Report on News24 where they read an email...

...Windows XP is just more spyware. Its no different to Win95/98...

Useless fact: Only 1 in 3 of the 25million PC's in the UK are capable of running Windows XP

Yes! (Bit late but I've just found out)

Download and install the Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP and run the TweakUI utility.

Under the Desktop section there's an option to remove the Recycle Bin from the desktop. As far as I can tell there's no option to put it anywhere else (on the extended Start Menu would have been nice) so emptying it will be a bi0tch.

D'oh! Scrub all that.

Right-click the desktop, select Sort Icons By and uncheck the entry that says Show Desktop Icons.
