Ah. That's it. Nothing worth protecting eh?

Add to that absolutely zero concern for anyone else's problems or worries and you have an underlying cause of why Britain is a big pile of shit right now...
Exactly.

Hey - I don't give a shit if my car falls to pieces. So I've an idea - lets ban all MOT tests and service centres. If I don't care about something, it can't possibly be relevant to anyone else.

I've had this conversation about ID and privacy with Calaen before. You're banging your head against a brick wall. It terrifies me that people actually think like this, but unfortunately, "I don't care" is always the most difficult philosophy to argue against.

I do not care if they know I watch mature porn even though I have a wife, I don't care if they know I listen to Hanson.

The point is, for one - lots of people value their privacy regardless of whether they have something to hide or not. The fact that you don't doesn't mean that others shouldn't. The fraud point is also valid - even if there's a very slim chance that it happens to you, the chances of it happening to some people, somewhere is not so slim.

It's fine to think that if ID cards come, you don't care as they won't affect *you* much... but they will affect others, very possibly in some very bad ways.

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn't a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

</rant>.

(Looks like I enjoy the feeling of brick wall on my braintank, gaff :|)

Nath, not worth discussing about, you won't get Cal to change his mind, and he won't be able to change yours.

I'm with you BTW, nothing I'd like better than stringing up the whole lot of authoritarian, illiberal, statist, self-serving muppets! It's telling that they want as much information about us as they can, and say things along the line of 'nothing to fear, nothing to hide' but as soon as we want to know information about them, such as their expenses, or how they actually voted (for the euro mps), they do all in their power to stop it.

Though I have nothing at all to hide I still don't like the idea of having my details in a central place for any simpleton public servant to lose on the train and don't like the idea of being forced to have an ID card on me all the time, hell I won't be forced into doing anything by these wankers.

I can see the benefits of having an ID card if it includied driving licence, medical details, passport etc but only if it was voluntary, it would be nice to not have to carry so much crap around all the time. That would be in an ideal world were we don't have to constantly watch ourselves against ID theft by gypsies and the chinese.
