Wazz, I take it you never paid attention in history lessons mate. As quite rightly pointed out earlier EVERY NATION was empire building at the time, so to say that it was a shit thing to do is an opinion based on modern values, values that didnt exist back then.

As also pointed out, Britain was a hell of a lot less shitty to its colonies than the Spanish or Germans were. Take India for example, as soon as Britiain gave it back its independance we had the nasty affair known as the "Night of the Long Knives". Put simply, while Britain was in charge of India the different religious factions were kept in check out of fear of the British Army. As soon as we left, all hell breaks loose as centuries old ethical divides resuface and run riot.

I am not saying that giving India back its independance was a bad idea, far from it. In the shape of the world today, empires dont have a place. But look at the situation that is happening there now, India vs Pakistan.
Do you honestly think that Pakistan would be arguing with India if Britian was still there?

In short, whilst the whole empire thing is a very subjective issue ie: evaluating past events with modern values, there is more than plenty to be proud of. I am proud of this countries history, although I am not proud of the people in charge of it. It seems to be a trend that people feel apologetic for Britain "hey I'm British, but I'm sorry about it". That really fucks me off.
Get a fucking life and while you're at it learn a bit about your country.

Sigh, another person jumps to conclusions about my thoughts and opinions. I'm not ashamed to be British, I don't apologise about my nation for anything. That would be pointless? While I am very grateful and honoured to have many men fight for the freedom I have now, I'm not PROUD of the fact we won wars, conquered half the world. Why should I be? What's to be PROUD of there? There's a line in which none of you seemed to have picked up upon - the line between gratitude and pride, and these are completely different things.

Ok, lets put it another way.

Without us, India would still be in despotism, ruled by the Maharaja's, Australia would be one big fuck off rock with no surfers on it, America wouldnt exist (actually, you got me on that one) and neither would modern medicine, home computing or the internet.

With regard to wars, yes we've won loads (the British army has only surrendered twice). WW2 nothing to be proud of? Backs to wall, so to speak, against Hitler and we still came through. Couldn't have done it without the Empire we had.

The gratitude point you make if a valid one and perfectly true, but the pride aspect stems from the men and women at the time having the balls to stand up and be counted instead of making peace with the aggressor. British military accomplishments are a good thing, it ensures that nobody fucks with us unless they have a serious death wish, and therefore are something to be proud of.
Yes, people die, but that is the way of the world and always will be. Be proud that all the wars we fought, we've won. Its the only reason we're still here.

eh we would'nt have been able to keep the empire even if we tried, although the rise of the british empire meant that the UK infrastructure was head and tails above the rest of the world it now means that in the 21st century were stuck with a infratructure which dont work anymore,

Also britain and other european counties did fook up a bit when they gave up there empires. Africa prime example France and Britain owned most of it carved it up the country into countries then left. Native africans never had the idea of having designated countries before being nomadic and that really messed things up.

Also the india-pakistan prob was our fault. make two countries next to each other with people in each who hate the otherside, now thats not a very good combination.

And the world wars were the catalists for change. I know its a bad reason but its because of the wars that we have advanced so far in 100 years than all the time before,
