Why, the 1st June!
The Queen has expressed the wish that her Golden Jubilee should be an occasion for celebration involving the whole community in this country and throughout the Commonwealth.
Yay! A right royal piss-up by order of 'Er Majesty. Hurrah!

and in my villages case, singing patriotic songs and putting tables and chairs out on a road... no chance

wish someone would release a cover of The Sex Pistol's brilliant God Save The Queen though... but who could do it justice? The Manics, of course :D

What we need is good old-fashioned war. That'd bring the country together. We can toast Ol' Liz with the lights out and sing songs to the accompaniment of the air-raid siren.

According to Her Majesty The Queen's Golden Jubilee - Official Site...
On the advice of the Prime Minister, The Queen has agreed that there should be an extra Bank Holiday for the Golden Jubilee on Monday 3 June 2002. The late May Bank Holiday, which would otherwise fall on Monday 27 May in 2002, will be moved to Tuesday 4 June. The dates were selected to allow as many people as possible to join in the celebrations.
So yes, you're right. FOUR DAY WEEKEND!

Nah, restructuring is what's needed. They are a pretty good tourist attraction, and they arn't hurting anyone (well, Indians aside.. ahem.. Price Phillip..).
They need to have the cash we give em reduced to cover touristy things like Castles, and the Queen to start wearing a dress on more than just one occasion, or to sell them afterwards.

I think scrapping them is too rash, and politically would make the PM the President, which is bad.

Evidently your grasp of what the monarchy in this country actually DO is blinkered. They aren't hurting anyone? How about every single tax payer in the fucking country? They need all that cash to cover the castles? You mean the one that's funded by Heritage, a completely unrelated organisation that is funded by the government? And no, it's not bad. The royalty do FUCK ALL in the way of running the country. The ONLY thing the Queen does is have a final casting vote on passing new laws. And I hardly think she's up to date with what's relevant and what goes on in the REAL WORLD.

Yea, what we need is a bit of old monarchy attitude back into the royal family like Liz th 1st or Queen Vic, they were evil, power hungry and cool

the Queen passes Royal Assent on each law. However, as is the convention for the past 200+ years, she always signs it. She can take all the intrest she likes, but doesn't have a say in anything.

Ahem, regarding the money. No, they don't need it. I may not have made it clear in the word "restructuring" that the amount of money should be hugely reduced, but according to most sources they do still "bring in" more money than we spend.

My point therefore, is to keep them as "English Heritage". I don't have a particular preference, it makes no political difference, but I think there are some more worthwhile considrations than just letting those bitter citizens publically flog them.

Gotta agree. The monarchy brings in loads more tourist dollars thean they take out (according to all the estimates I've heard.) And the Queen coul potentially reject a law passed by parliament but that would mean her right to assent would be scrapped immediately and probably the whole monarchy. She ain't that daft j00 know :)

It's part of our history. Bring back the Plantaginates :D

/me agrees with Shovel.

Personally I dont mind the Monarchy at all. I much prefer them, and the comedy that Prince Phillip brings, than the prospect of a President instead.

Look at the US for christs sake.

Speaking of Prince Phillip, didnt he speak to a driving instructor in Scotland and utter the immortal line: "How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to get them to pass their test?"

How can you not love the guy????

I heard that the Queen (God bless her) made a 30million quid LOSS on her share investments last year. FFS 30Million, thats Hayuuuugge bundle of cash, that prolly could have been used better elsewhere.
