What do you want ?

Internal or external.

I had the same problem as you : crappy connexant internal software modem which d/c me twice a night (on a good night) and was crappy slow.

Traded it for an INTERNAL hayes accura V92 and get great service for it.

£49.99 from PCWORLD but you can get it cheaper over the net.

Diamond Super Express 56e pro is the bees knees in 56k (apparently) about £40 I reckon.

diamond supra express 56e is the best modem available imo

i had one for a long time and it never gave me any problems, excellent pings
90ms traceroutes
95 - 150 ping in bworld
thats in game

basically diamond supra + good isp = lovely
lovely as far as modems go

Correct....

Quake 2 can ping 90-150 constant on my old supra express 56e, most of the time it's hovers around 110-120.

Make sure you don't get the express 'i' though, killer 200-300 pings, same isp, same setup:(

As with all dial up's these days, it's isp that the killer choice.

ISDN from Lineone/BT...

Get a 40-100 ping on Q3.
For CS, 60-120.

Other than that, hamster in a wheel with phone lines connected to its arse is quite good I hear :)

I cant get ISDN or ASDL or cable. It appears the paper cups at the ends of me piece of string need upgrading :(

Satellite access, maybe thats the (very, very expensive and not all that great anyway) answer.

Ive re-opened this thread (not that it was closed:rolleyes: )
cos Im in a bit of a quandry.

I accept that Diamond Super express 56e pro is the best (possibly) 56k modem for gaming, but, serial or usb port. Ive got an option to get one or the other. But which is fastest.??

Erm, something like, or words to the effect of, and this isnt a direct quiote
no piss-off you village living idiot, your line only has one strand and is incapable of supporting a sparrow, never mind ISDN

I think.;)

OK, thats solves that then. Im gonna see if i can trial them both, just to check like (not that I doubt ur wisdom ;) )

Heh, reason why I say that is because they have a tendency to cut out when the CPU is busy, thereby lagging you out and potentially cutting your connection. They're just as bad as winmodems, and also result in a large amount of packet loss...

bt recently replaced my isdn box btw,and on the new one was a usb connection to some kind of terminal adaptor in the box.the bloke told me how great is was ,so i tried it.

You won't notice any speed difference between serial and USB as the bandwidth on both is far greater than that of your telephone line.

USB may or may not come with an external power supply. They don't need to as they can draw power through the USB port (as ADSL 'frogs' do) but this does put extra strain on your poota's power supply unit. This may or may not be noticeable depending on how many devices you already have running off it, your CPU speed, power requiremtns of your motherboard, etc.

USB modem also requires correct USB and modem drivers otherwise it simply will not work.

They also swallow CPU cycles so when your PC is busy you may experience higher pings and possibly even lost connection.

Basically, you can't go wrong with a serial modem and personally I wouldn't even consider going for USB.

/edit: Bah! Took me too long to type this so now I'm just repeating whats already been said. Fine. FINE! :(
