Yes, you don't believe in religion but you are OK with people who do, that makes you even more hard for me to understand if i'm honest.

Isn't that like saying "you don't like a willy up the bum, but understand gay people and i can't understand that"?

Just saying, can't people accept and understand other people and their ways, without believing/doing it themselves?

I think, what i've always believed, Sharma has hit the discussion where it matters. Let people believe, don't be an a-hole towards other peoples beliefs and in all basis, do what you do and let others do so too without any judgement.

Seems to me that the last hundered years all the wars have pretty much been fought for anything but religion and they have been the most destructive ones. WW1, WW2, Korean War, Vietnam, Invasion of Afghanistan (Russain one). Infact just off the top of my head i cant think of many wars that have been fought over religion in a loOong time, so i just dont get your point at all unless off course you are refering to the war on terror which is not a war by any definition.

Maybe I was referring to religions war on reason and common sense.

No, its more like saying crazy people think they can fly and you still let them jump from windows, why would you let them and say its OK because it's what they believe?

So you carry on letting people believe in things that don't exist and letting them make decisions that affect themselves and others based on those beliefs... and I will from time to time stand up and object ok?

but why should you not be an ass towards someones beliefs?

they make a CHOICE to believe something, and they must have reasons for that. why should you not give an oppinion no matter how harsh someone thinks it is?
if you make a choice to do something, you should be ready for what people say. you can ignore it or defend it.

its not like picking on someone for having black skin, which is totally different. because they do not have a choice to be born that way, therfore i believe its morally wrong to mock that.

One thing I do have to say, which quite a bit of a grey area, is having world leaders making decisions for their countries based on religious beliefs.

It's a somewhat worrying situation that Bush is a born again christian for a few reasons, mainly because when you're in a position of power like that, I don't think it'd bode well if you attacked a country and said "God told me to" which iirc was the initial excuse he gave for Iraq?

If that's what you're on about Mojo.

Also common sense hardly applies to beliefs generally although it can affect judgement on a situation due to your style of thinking but I think human nature would react in quite a similar manner regardless of whether you're an atheist or not.

I'm not saying religious people shouldn't be given power in governmental situations, rather decisions shouldn't be allowed to be clouded by their beliefs.

Can you imagine the state of the US if the south had won the civil war? Slavery/white america/gays getting persecuted. It's a realistic situation mainly because of Christian Fundamentalists.

I highly doubt if you said you were gay to your average christian, they'd react by screaming you're going to burn in bloody hell with brimstone!

Stop basing your views on fundamentalist opinion, as I said, they're a small sect of fuckwits which take the bible to a literal extent where as to my knowledge, your average christian follows it as a guideline for a good life and passage into heaven, at least they can die in a peaceful manner - are you familiar with the saying 'thoughts of dying atheist' ?

It's commonly seen that when Atheists do come up to death, they begin bargaining with god irrespective of their life long belief of science - which is ironic in a sense.

I am and have always been a straight up atheist myself, but i'm prepared to be proven wrong - Einstein himself, yes, the epitome of science in the modern world was religious and yet he produced the most simple and yet powerful equation we know today.

Einstein was looking for God at work - although he never saw this, he was religious to his dying day.

So blatently if you think religious people are idiots, then you'd be calling the greatest mind the human race has ever seen an idiot.

The difference is, again, the only people who'll want to actually crucify you are the fundamentalists.

Your average christian would just laugh at you or just carry on because they'll be as hard headed as you are over their beliefs.

I wouldn't call them idiots, deluded yes and yes I believe Einstein if he did believe in god to be deluded, but he wouldn't be the first great mind to have a touch of madness built in and this would not detract from his achievements.

My views are not based on fundamentalist opinion they are based simply on my inability and unwillingness to support and condone the constant perpetuation of what I can only describe as a lie, that largest most socially accepted lie know to man, a lie that it so socially accepted that it is supported and defended by people who don't actually believe in it, nothing more nothing less. I treat it no differently than fairies, dragons, Santa the easter bunny and the insane who think they can fly, talk to animals, walk on water, but of course if I said that educated adults who believed in one of the above were deluded no one would defend them to any where near the degree that they would defend religion.

We can argue that toss about whether religion is good, bad, ugly all day long but none of that will change the simple fact that it is completely untrue and I cannot condone, defend or support a lie of such magnitude just because it may be argued that it some cases and for some people its a good lie...when all is said and done it's a lie.

it doesnt matter to science wether god exists or not , he (or she or they or it) are a non-falsifiable hypothesis in that context.

and its perfectly ok to tell people they are wrong when they claim science a belief , or tell them they are silly when they ask science to disprove god.

this is not faith-bashing , but breaches of methodology bashing.

should prolly have some better examples , apples and oranges are both fruits and science and faith isnt even as close as that :)

However it does alot of people alot of good.

The only thing i don't agree with that doesn't affect me is the way kids are brainwashed into it from a young age. I think that kids should be left to make their own minds up when they are older.

So you have definative evidence that there is no God?

That is the weakest most over used defence used by defenders of religion.
Look up burden of proof.

Also why does it matter to you if someone does believe in a God? Surely its their right to believe if they wish to so long as it does not directly interfere with your life.

Yes it their right to believe and it's my right to point out there delusions, (not something i do on a day to day basis. Religions have preachers to spread their beliefs are you suggesting non believers are not supposed to communicate?

Dont start harping on about extremeists or fundamentalists. Thats a different arguement.

I don't recall that I did?
The people you are directing your views upon are the normal people who simply derive comfort from their religion.

There is nothing "Normal" about believing in things that don't exist.........oh wait.......
I have just as much right to express my views as anyone else, so your goin to have to live with it or ignore me.

I am objecting to encouraging lies and to the masses blindly following people.

The irony of the situation is this:

The atheists bash religion for blindly accepting what they've read in a book.

Funnily enough this is the case with most atheists have done the exact same thing - They read a book about science they got from school/library/book store and have blindly accepted that this is the truth despite the fact that a lot of these people rarely understand the concepts behind it.

Suprisingly enough a lot of scientists these days are religious and are searching for the answer to these questions and are ready to be proven wrong provided they come across something which outright disproves their beliefs and yet at the same time also search for a reason to believe.

The atheists that state that their PoV is outright correct and religious people are lunies are incredibly hypocritical.

You can only ever have a debate when you understand both sides of the coin and it's quite blatent that a lot of people don't - which is a shame really because a debate over science vs religion without the outright "You're fucking nuts" attitude produces some incredibly interesting philosophical conversations and I love debating it.

I would have loved to take a more active role in this thread but it seems at large that a few just can't seem to let go of their views that religious people are idiots.

Actually you could argue that from a historical point of view, early scientists/scholars/thinkers were largely intertwined with the church. Byxantine scholars and mathematicians for example.

Well, that i guess is a matter of view. Which way the example goes. I don't find it crazy, but you do, so i say this, and you that. Don't think we can agree on it. That example and all our variations, are so strongly based on our own opinions, that they become a bit moot.

Do go ahead and judge it though, and this is for tris- aswell, yes, it's in your every right to speak against religion, call people stupid for it and whatever you wish, IF you realise that even if it's not as bad as racism(matter of opinion again), it's still as much acting like a bit of an a-hole. But that's just in general, about judging people, and their ways.

About your answer tris-, would you call a vegetarian stupid, or someone who exercises? How about someone playing games? It's their choice, as you said, and as such, should you be called an idiot for the things you choose to do?

Maybe I was referring to religions war on reason and common sense.

Funnily enough, as someone else pointed out earliar on in the thread, what is considered reason and scientific fact today doesnt not automatcally mean it is correct. As time goes by people make new discoveries that disprove what was taken as fact previously. Flat earth or sun revolving round the earth are a couple of good examples.

I understand the point that in history it (religion) was an assault on reason and knowledge and i would be a idiot if i came on here and tried to make out otherwise. There can be no argument either about the benefit that science has brought to peoples everyday living conditions.

The average religious person today is not some Bin Laden type who wishes to blow things up or some kind of Neo Christian fundamentalist that wants to have all gay people die. The vaste majority of religious people are easy going peaceable people and we cannot judge a way living on the actions of a violent, vocal minority.

I consider myself to be a believer in the idea of one God, this does not mean i am some sort of irrational, pyscho that thinks all science is just B.S. I dont impose my views on you and the majority of people like me who have belief in this concept (God) dont neither. I dont run about calling atheists idiots or stupid and i dont think many religious people do.

I must admit though i do always say to myself, wait till you are faced with a tough spot in your life or when you are getting close to your death what you will be saying, though never to you directly just as a thought to myself.

i would say you are completely intitled to tell people they are stupid, they can say fuck you or what they want - opinions are opinions. however i dont think people can be religious without being "fundamentalists" (in one way or another) but i do believe people can have beliefs (which i determine is different from being religious)

yay! i have a big bum!

While your on this crusade for what you feel is true are you gonna go round your local Primary school and tell all the kids that there is no Santa? The tooth fairy is a myth perpetuated buy vile parents and guardians set upon undermineing the rightious and superiour truth cultists like yourself?

If you dont believe in religion then its fine. So what? If it dont affect you then leave people alone. Essentially you are argueing over something that must ultimately mean nothing to you.

Only reason I can find for your inability to allow others their freedom to choose their faith is because you are sitting in your darkend room spitting phlem at the monitor because people DONT believe what YOU believe.

Good grief mate. Have a chill pill.

Well not really what i was asking, as such, but fair enough.

But i think you also do realise, that people will, in such a case(when only thing "non stupid" is your way), think of you as an a-hole* or (enter word), and in all general way to look at things, it's quite true?

My way or the..you're an idiot way, just 'cause you don't like some activity?

Or do you see it as completely ok and nice?

I'm just asking, 'cause i don't mind people knowingly doing that, and knowing what they are doing. A-hole by choice if you will. That's FINE. I dislike people who are a-holes and think it's "normal" or a nice thing, or in some cases, a favor to other people.

Also, i would like to know how you feel if someone thinks something you do is moronic, idiotic, stupid, etc(add appropriate comments)?

*I use the term a-hole as a figurative word. Not saying you are particularly an a-hole, but also saying you're not very nice.

Stating my opinion regarding religion on FH is hardly a crusade.

No I wouldn't tell that to kids, I have kids myself and am happy to perpetuate the Santa myth for them just like my folks did for me after all it's harmless fun hardly comparable to religious indoctrination and kids grow out of it by themselves just like I did, i did state that if "Adults believed I would say something but i will excuse you for missing that part.

Explain what a truth cultist is? I get the impression that you meant that in a negative context which makes you what? a promoter of bullshit?

If you dont believe in religion then its fine. So what? If it dont affect you then leave people alone. Essentially you are arguing over something that must ultimately mean nothing to you.

Why don't you leave me alone to have my opinion in peace?, practice what you preach etc? these are discussion boards I am discussing where as you are basically telling me i shouldn't.

Only reason I can find for your inability to allow others their freedom to choose their faith is because you are sitting in your darkend room spitting phlem at the monitor because people DONT believe what YOU believe.

Do you see me stopping anyone form believing any anything they want? Just because I have an opinion on it doesn't mean I am willing to actively go and stop people from do anything, unlike you however who seems to want me to stop having my opinion and discussing it. And no I am currently sat in my living room, my other posts were made while at work, not a dark room in sight or any phlegm except form the man flu that i have and I have no need to chill I am not excited, having and stating my opinions doesn't mean that I'm all all pent up and excited about it's just something I feel strongly about and I wanted to join in the discussion as I have every other religion thread.

i dont really "believe" in anything i mean stuff happens but i dont go about believeing in it. from what i can gather is the universe wasn't there then some particles collided and boom then stuff happened, the planet evolved...much like if you leave a coffee cup unattended for a matter of weeks life will evolve, we just happen to be the life that evolved in the universal coffee cup.

As for god and all that i dont know if there is one or there isn't one and tbh i dont really care either he is there or he isn't either way me going around believeing in him isn't going to make much difference.

Basically my beliefs are stuff happens which usually leads to more stuff and we coast along having stuff happen to us (or not in some cases) some people lead good lives and when they are ready to die they think "yep, twas all good" some people dont do anything and when theyre ready to die they think "aw feck". Personally I'd like to be the first one, not because i think i'll go to a better place when i die because there is the distinct possibility that we dont go anywhere when we die so if you live your life building up everything for the great hereafter and there isnt one youve wasted what you did have.

thats what i think any hoo, i live for me not for a god or what might happen.

Okay, read some of the thread, not everything.

Something I noticed are the general misconception that some people have that the "big bang" theory includes an explosion. The name "big bang" was given to the theory by opponents of it to try and ridicule it initially and the explosion part is often used by opponents of it, using that the general public doesn't always know what the big bang theory is excatly(and often they themselves doesn't know what the theory actually is). The "Big Bang Theory" does include EXPANSION, not explosion. A very rapid and violent expansion from the singularity (Look up Big Bang and M-string theory sometime).

The Big Bang did not create flowers, life, and all the advanced things we see today. Those are actually created by explosions or implosions (Not sure what a SuperNova catogorizes as, so that part (flowers coming from explosion) might be right). The Big Bang only created primary elements up to and including Iron if I remember correctly and the universe needed the energy from SuperNovas to create the, to us, more important elements, which allows life to exist. Only energies in the class of supernova is high enough to manipulate the quarks of the atoms into combining into other materials that is more complex than Iron. This is also the reason why the "peanut butter" evidence some Creationists use to disprove Big Bang is wrong. True, Energy and Matter can create life, but you need SuperNova energy, so while there is energy and matter in glasses with peanut butter, the energy is so low that we should never find life created inside, like they want people to believe Big Bang science state there should.

Also, a big misconception in the debate of science vs. religion is that sceince proofs religion wrong, which leads to the massively asked question "Whats the proof god doesn't exist?".
Science and Religion is not mutually excluded. No science is created on the assumption that god does not exist, while on the other hand, no science is created on the assumption that god does exist (Creationism/Intelligent Design/Young Earth Creationism is not and has never been science! Look up the definition of science if you disagree!). What science does prove wrong is that some of the stories in various religious books are wrong. The creation of man as it is in the bible is clearly not correct, but that does not mean that god(s) can't exist, that just means that the book written by humans about god 1600 years ago is wrong (1600 years for Christians).
Even the M-theory about the Big Bang does not prove that God could not have been the factor that created the membranes that created the big bang and hence the universe.
Evolution does not say that God does not exist, it is merely the way life developed after it was put into existance.

Another misconception is that some people believe evolution state that humans comes from apes and monkeys. That is not so. We are related and we are both the modern development of varies mutations from the same ancestor. Apes and Monkeys that you see today in the wild or in the zoo are, like humans, modern creatures which has been through just as long a step of evolution to end up where they are now. Apes and Monkeys are not going to turn into humans over time. They can, however, mutate slowly over time into a human-like creature and given enough time (billions upon billions of years) it is possible that a species of Apes will end up as what we today classify as humans, but by then the human race of today will as well have developed into something else, perhaps far more complex and superior.

Also, a misconception is that Evolution is completely random and hence that things can't be as complex and 'perfect' as they are today just by random. And while the basis of Evolution is random to some degree, it has a major factor in it, that makes the random into perfection: "Natural Selection". The Natural selection makes sure that the mutations that works in terms of surviveablity and reproduceablility, will end up being a dominating new trait, as those who has the advantage will survive and those without it will suffer/die at their expense. If a mutation that randomly happens is not benifitial, those with such mutations will die out and the final species will not have the unfavourable trait.
How can we then share the same ancestor as the Apes and Monkeys? Wouldn't they have died at our expense when we got some advantage? How can 2 different creatures develop from the same?
That is actually pretty simple, while it seems complex. Some traits can be mutually exclusive, while both giving an advantage, hence both mutations will continue to survive, but not together. Or even if not mutually exclusive, there can simply be cases where two different mutations happened so close to each other that not all the species had both. That could create 3 species. Those with trait A, those with trait B and those with both trait A and B, and those without any of the traits would simply go extinct over time.

A question often asked to Atheist are why do they care about people being religious if they themselves does not believe in god, as then they shouldn't care about it at all.
While truely, any Atheist should not care about what the average Joe believes in his own home as long as it doesn't influence the Atheist in any way, there are plenty of examples and events in everyday life for every person on this planet, that is somehow influenced by the believes of others.
Now, I can't speak for all of UK, but here in Denmark, we are, as standard, set to pay 1% tax to the church; We can choose not to, but unless we choose not to, we pay 1%. Thats not a big deal and as it covers the price of the funeral, I have choosen to keep paying it, in case of sudden death through accidents, so my relatives won't be stuck with a huge bill as well as grief.
Also, all religions in Denmark has to be approved by the Church Ministery. For some reasons only Christians can decide if a certain religion should be allowed practice in Denmark, amazingly enough they do however allow other religions than their own.
Now, I don't support the Royal family here, and would love if we didn't have them, but they are by LAW required to be Christians, and if they are not and expresses so, they will be ripped of their position.

Those are all minor things in my view, except the last one to some degree, as that is actually a violation of human right to believe what you want to believe. They will loose their job if they express any other faith. If it was any other job position that had that kind of pressure, it would have been taken up with the humans right commision.

But it does bother me, as an Atheist, that some people are lobbying against common sense, trying to be allowed not to teach Evolution in school, due to it contradicting a 1600 year old book that they believe god has written. While I was not teached that way, it is troublesome that some people could end up getting educated not on facts and into critical thinking, but into mindlessly believing an old book of myths rather than facts. A lot of those fundamentalist that want not to teach Evolution state that it is "The Theory of Evolution", but that just shows they don't know how science works, as Gravity is actually also "The Theory of Gravity" and so forth, as everything in science is labelled Theory, even when it is a fact. And actually, the Theory of Evolution, as put forth by Darwin, does not have any discussion about whatever Evolution happened or not, as Evolution itself is a fact, but the Theory part is HOW did it happen.
The reason it bothers me that they want to teach religious myth rather than real science to young people, as that it handicaps a group of the population. While it might be a small group, it might have contained the one person who would later cure cancer. But now, his or hers entire understanding of science is twisted due to being teached on myths and will never end up becoming the person he or she might have been if educated after scientific standards.

Anyway, I think I ranted on long enough here. I hope I didn't end up mixing anything together, but in case I have, always remember to look stuff up before you accept it as facts, as I am just a man, and could easily have made a minor errors while explaining M-string theory for instance. Look it up and make your own judgements.

Not saying you are particularly an a-hole, but also saying you're not very nice.

i dont care if someone thinks im an arse hole or if somehting i do is stupid. i dont really care what anyone thinks who isnt a close friend or family member. too much these days does everyone give a shit what others think, people need to get a girp and realise it isnt the end of the world.

i see it as completley ok to say what ever the fuck i want about anything i say something about.

People shouldn't think that much about what others think, it's true and i agree. Too much emphasis is put on it already. Look like this, do like this, it's not really right. But as you are KNOWINGLY judging others, can i ask, do you think it's helping or harming the situation that you're actively judging others and their decicions, on the whole matter of, people should think less about what others think?

If that makes any sense.

Best religion has to be catholosism. Sure they have a daft set of ideas about birth control amongst other things but in reality you can do whatever you like as long as you confess and say sorry afterwards.

if they are bothered that much then they have more issues than believing in a god.
