I mean, let's be honest here, we realistically need a transition period, but we clearly need to pump zillions more into it to make that transition period *much* smaller.

It'll never happen though.

We need a full-spectrum move across the west to at least reduce the need for fossil fuels to the level we can supply ourselves. That’s just defensively prudent, never mind the environmental angle. Stop funding dictatorships and at least dramatically reduce environmental impact. Short term pain for long term win win.

I agree 100%. Only change I'd make is I'd put Environment > Defence in your analysis. Rationally, we need to start thinking that way - if we had been thinking that way for the past 3 decades we already would have weaned ourselves off the majority of oil and gas - and certainly all of it from Russia. And we'd have done that decades ago.
