I get the feeling that Putin is going to do something mental soon.

My armchair general prediction is that Kiyv will be a Stalingrad-esque meatgrinder over the next few days, and to force a peace, Putin will nuke Lviv, maybe Odessa too. He's willing to sacrifice a few Russian cities getting counter nuked, so he can appear to be the victim of western aggression.

I don't think they're getting there with an encirclement of Kyiv. The column from Toms post was meant to be part of that, but because of their monumentally shite tactics, they got burned very badly. They don't have the infantry numbers to do it on foot. Anything in a vehicle is getting mashed. Any SF they send in is getting isolated and smashed. They can hit the city from a distance with cruise missiles, but you have to start wondering how many of them they have left.

So your armchair general prediction is end of the world?

If we break that taboo, the use of nukes, then MAD falls down, everyone arms to the teeth and sooner or later global thermonuclear war is the inevitable outcome.

Cheery :(

I'll tell you one thing: Ukraine ain't worth that.

The MSB in Sweden have updated : https://rib.msb.se/filer/pdf/28706.pdf and recommend that we prepare in solidarity (ie do not take all the water containers etc). We (Kris and I) have been mildly prepping for a week or so according to the ticklist ie we are missing a few items, however if they decide to nuke Stockholm we will be in the initial radius (better here than up to 10km out) so will be dust. I hope Putin does not resort to this however I fear that he will either nuke a city in Ukraine or destroy a power station or two and blame it on the Ukrainians (as they have done with the maternity hospital)... either way it will be a disaster for this continent depending how the windblows....

Sweden are not strangers to Russia poking about in 2013 they did a nuclear test just before easter near Gotland (it is called Ryska påsken no nukes were detonated) and in 2014 and 2018 subs were spotted near Götland... Gotland would be strategic for Russia as they could control the baltic sea from there...

Sweden were woefully unprepared in 2013 and were helped out by NATO countries, since then they have invested quite a lot in defense. It is an interesting time here, work days consist of discussions over whether the bomb shelter under the office can be prepared in 48 hours (my team are responsible so I am ultimately responsible for the building we work in).... as a manager these are discussions I never imagined I would have to have but this also goes for a global pandemic......

I'd be surprised if Putin uses nukes in any capacity outside of self defence. I don't think the USA would retaliate by nuking a few small russian cities, I think they'd go for the fucking jugular and level Moscow.

Despite comrade Scouse predicting Global Thermonuclear War, I reckon the chances of that are almost nil.
Putin might have gone mad but he's not a fucking idiot and I would hope even if he did give his generals he order to launch, they would simply tell him to get fucked and pop a cap in his ass.

I think people in the military are 'less likely' to press the button than they were during the cold war though.

Unlike the Soviet times, people have access to much more information these days, and whilst it's okay to ignore that, be ignorant and repeat the Putin line, the scenario is slightly different if he then tells you to launch nukes at people.

So yeah, I think us stopping Putin from doing whatever he likes is completely worth it.

Maybe it was them?

The thing is about all this shit - how do you know.

We need to think about war in a different way. So much of the conversation above is about preparing for a world in which we throw nukes about. If we get that far, why bother preparing?

Yes, because Ukraine will unleash a radioactive cloud across their country just to frame Putin?

Excuse me but I managed to solve Monkey Island 2 without online help, so I'm pretty clever.

Nah, no MAD, just the removal of nuclear taboo. Once it's on the table and has been used without the end of the world coming about, it will never come off.

Let me ask you this though: If the Ukraine ain't worth it, what about the Ukraine and Georgia? Still not worth it? Ukraine, Georgia and Finland? No? Ukraine, Georgia, Finland and Sweden? Still not worth it? Add in Azerbaijan and Armenia. Still not worth it? Add in Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikstan, Kyrgyztan? Still not worth it? When does it become worth it? When every non nuclear armed country on the continent is a Russian puppet state? At what point do we say "No more"? Or do we just hope to ride it out, pray that Putin dies of old age at 70, rather than 100?

Yeah, but if we let Russia do that and Putin dies, he'll just be replaced by the same thing, or possibly worse, doing the same shit.

Well now COVID is over we can't do the Two Minute Hate against anti-vaxxers any more, so it's now the Russians instead.

Can't help feeling the next few months are going to be a bit brutal for Russians living in the West - even if they hate Putin and want nothing to do with the war. Take it out on Putin and his acolytes, sure, but not innocent Russians over here / in the US. On social media I've already seen all sorts of nonsense, from Russian restaurants (often run by Ukranians) getting attacked in NYC, to Tchaikovsky performances being cancelled in Wales - because of course, cancelling Russians who died over a hundred years ago is the best way to get back at Putin.

I'm more concerned that people aren't outraged that this clearly shows social media is patently a mind-control tool.

In fact all our media tbh. Every single page on the BBC website is something to do with Ukraine. Click through BBC News > Wales > North West Wales and you get this story.

I wish our masters would put this much effort into Climate Change.

Agree on your first two lines. On your last I only have one question for you - Are you having a laugh?

If they're going to use mind control shit on us, they might as well do something good with it.
