The pro gun guy also said that the law in virginia whereby you are only allowed to buy 1 gun a month was a great way of stopping incidents like this. Oh yeah? You think?
From the comments I've read, a good number of Americans seem to be under the impression that these problems could be solved by loosening the restrictions on Concealed Carry Permits (CCPs). The argument goes that if a few students and teachers at VTech had been carrying concealed weapons then the shooter would have been killed before 32 innocent people could be killed.
I believe this shows how deeply ingrained the "Gun Culture" is in the US and how impossible it would be for any President to pass (or even support) tighter restrictions and remain in office. It's hard to fault the logic, I guess...if you know that everyone else has a gun, you need one to protect yourself.
I know gun crime is on the rise in the UK, but it seems to me that by making
guns illegal in the UK, you restrict gun ownership to criminals. Most career criminals have very little interest in 'offing' random people. To be honest, provided you're not involved in gang violence or drug dealing, you're statistically very unlikely to get shot in the UK purely because the guy you get into a drunken fight with in the pub is unlikely to have a handgun down the front of his trousers. No matter how good your permit system is (and from what I can tell the US system isn't all that good) as long as civilians are allowed to carry guns legally, some of those guns will be licensed to the section of the population I like to refer to as the "Grade-A Headcase" demographic....
People with mental problems, poor impulse control and emotional instability should NOT be allowed to carry guns. If that means that no-one else can either, that would seem to me to be a fair trade.
It's a very sad day and my thoughts go out to the families of the people.
But we hear about this constantly on every news channel. It dominated it to be fair. How many civilian lives are lost in Iraq every day? yet they get blah blah dead. Oooh we're getting some hot weather at the moment. Neither of them occur in our country so why does a killing in America differ from that in Iraq? both are tragic losses of life but why does this deserve to be so much more important than the lives lost day by day in Iraq. They speak english? they're white?
Some things I do not understand clearly.

Kids die while in school in america.
Civilians die in a war zone at the at the hands of a suicide bomber.
Key parts are kids and war zone. And every day there are suicide bombings and there have been for the best pasrt of 3 years at first there were lots of news storys about it. Now it is old news when someone dies in a war zone where as this has only just happened so in the news.
I hate posts like this there was a huge amount of news about suicide bombsing and colatarel damage 3 years ago now this seems like a its cool to hate the war post.
so if there was shootings in schools every day people should just accept it and not give a fuck?
I totally agree with morph on this, oh and... KIDS die in war aswell, and the war was only started because the government took us to war, why should we see the deaths of iraqis as figures and the deaths of 32 as a tragedy.
I'm sorry but the loss of each life is equally as bad and upsetting, i dont think you can go to an Iraqi mother who's child just got blown up and say "hey, kids have been dieing here for years, suck it up"just as you cant go to a the mother of one of those 32 and say "it's good you're getting media attention because this happened in the west and it's more shocking".
Yes if a kid in school died every day though getting shot in the US for 3 years i garentee the UK press would not have all this about it. Over 1000 days of the same kind of news story would stop people watching said news show and buying news papers. Hence they change the news daily and there are only so many ways you can make a different news story about a suicide bombing in iraq
Well, this to me is no different then any other news involving a person, a gun and another person.
All the same really. As in bad, but not life changing.
Ofcourse it owuld be better this didn't happen, but it does and there's really sh*t all to do to "eradicate" it. Sad fact or a way of modern life really.
Not trying to troll here, just saying how it makes(or lack of) me feel.
and thats just the point, the media only portrays what it thinks will sell papers rather than the horrors going on in the world and trying to fix it, our morals are too easily led by popular media as to hear this one day and to forget it the next without doing anything to improve the situation of the lives of others. How would you like to hear that your child is being used to sell papers not because people care but simply because the media knows it'll make them some money today but tomorrow they couldnt give a shit?
And everyday the killings in Iraq are on the BBC news page they are rported. But tell me what you think the papers and news would achieve if you like it or not people stop caring. Your average person who dose not pretend to be deeply affected by the war in Iraq. What could the news change? Lets report about a suicide bombr killing his own people in Iraq today because that will force everyone to leave Iraq and the war to stop? I do think its as bad as people getting killed in the states but after a year of nearly daily news about suicide bombings it is hard to care about it.
But i would say if you really cared about people getting killed rater than just taking another shot at the war in Iraq you would have mentioned all the child soilders that kill each other daily in Africa but no only Iraq gets mentioned. Are people in Iraq worth more than kids in Africa?
Well.. a school is actually a really good target to blow up as a terrorist, easy access, easy way to hide a bomb in a briefcase or bag so nobody will notice and blowing up a school will cause loads of terror.
It's kinda hard(er) to get a bomb or any kind of explosion device near important person for the country anyway.
Dunno if this been posted yet - but oh well. It didn't take much time for them to come up with this

If they so strongly believe that all being armed would reduce crime why dont they believe that all having nuclear weapons would reduce war? Bah politricks!
Talking of the Iraq war (just as an example) all we ever hear about is the suicide bombings, yet the news that the puppet government we installed there is routinely killing members of its own population, simply because they are Suni or Shi'it (I can't remember which), never makes the news, yet that is the cause of the suicide bombings. If one population wasn't so repressed by their own government, then most of the killings in Iraq wouldn't happen, yet do you hear about if on the news? never, cause it doesn't suit the paper's or the government's purpose to say that we might be ultimately responsible for bad things happening.
