The pro gun guy also said that the law in virginia whereby you are only allowed to buy 1 gun a month was a great way of stopping incidents like this. Oh yeah? You think?

From the comments I've read, a good number of Americans seem to be under the impression that these problems could be solved by loosening the restrictions on Concealed Carry Permits (CCPs). The argument goes that if a few students and teachers at VTech had been carrying concealed weapons then the shooter would have been killed before 32 innocent people could be killed.

I believe this shows how deeply ingrained the "Gun Culture" is in the US and how impossible it would be for any President to pass (or even support) tighter restrictions and remain in office. It's hard to fault the logic, I guess...if you know that everyone else has a gun, you need one to protect yourself.

I know gun crime is on the rise in the UK, but it seems to me that by making
guns illegal in the UK, you restrict gun ownership to criminals. Most career criminals have very little interest in 'offing' random people. To be honest, provided you're not involved in gang violence or drug dealing, you're statistically very unlikely to get shot in the UK purely because the guy you get into a drunken fight with in the pub is unlikely to have a handgun down the front of his trousers. No matter how good your permit system is (and from what I can tell the US system isn't all that good) as long as civilians are allowed to carry guns legally, some of those guns will be licensed to the section of the population I like to refer to as the "Grade-A Headcase" demographic....

People with mental problems, poor impulse control and emotional instability should NOT be allowed to carry guns. If that means that no-one else can either, that would seem to me to be a fair trade.

According the ITN news, the most liberal state on gun purchase and ownership is Virginia where you dont need a license or even a background check, or ID, the only limitation if buyin a gun under these circumstances is that you can only purchase one gun a month.

hmmm, least restrictive state on gun ownership >>>>>> biggest school shooting.....

It's a very sad day and my thoughts go out to the families of the people.

But we hear about this constantly on every news channel. It dominated it to be fair. How many civilian lives are lost in Iraq every day? yet they get blah blah dead. Oooh we're getting some hot weather at the moment. Neither of them occur in our country so why does a killing in America differ from that in Iraq? both are tragic losses of life but why does this deserve to be so much more important than the lives lost day by day in Iraq. They speak english? they're white?

Some things I do not understand clearly.

Games have an agelimit.
Parents buy underaged kids games that they shouldn't.
If i bought a 13 year old a bottle of jäger, i'd be locked up (probably not that harsh). If i buy them a videogame, it's nothing.

People need to take their head out of their backside and realise WHERE the problem is.

I totally agree with you, i was discussing this with my parents and i brought up that point only for them so say 'stop being so insensitive that isn't relavent!!!one1'

Iraqis live every day in fear of such acts which happen much more frequently and on an even bigger scale. The difference is they were occupied and their country thrown into turmoil, while the American's just encourage these sort of acts with their ridiculous Gun Laws.

I of course feel great sympathy for the family os those who where affected, but this kind of act shows exactly the type of hypocrasy so present in nowadays media.

Kids die while in school in america.

Civilians die in a war zone at the at the hands of a suicide bomber.

Key parts are kids and war zone. And every day there are suicide bombings and there have been for the best pasrt of 3 years at first there were lots of news storys about it. Now it is old news when someone dies in a war zone where as this has only just happened so in the news.

I hate posts like this there was a huge amount of news about suicide bombsing and colatarel damage 3 years ago now this seems like a its cool to hate the war post.

so if there was shootings in schools every day people should just accept it and not give a fuck?

I totally agree with morph on this, oh and... KIDS die in war aswell, and the war was only started because the government took us to war, why should we see the deaths of iraqis as figures and the deaths of 32 as a tragedy.

I'm sorry but the loss of each life is equally as bad and upsetting, i dont think you can go to an Iraqi mother who's child just got blown up and say "hey, kids have been dieing here for years, suck it up"just as you cant go to a the mother of one of those 32 and say "it's good you're getting media attention because this happened in the west and it's more shocking".

Yes if a kid in school died every day though getting shot in the US for 3 years i garentee the UK press would not have all this about it. Over 1000 days of the same kind of news story would stop people watching said news show and buying news papers. Hence they change the news daily and there are only so many ways you can make a different news story about a suicide bombing in iraq

and thats just the point, the media only portrays what it thinks will sell papers rather than the horrors going on in the world and trying to fix it, our morals are too easily led by popular media as to hear this one day and to forget it the next without doing anything to improve the situation of the lives of others. How would you like to hear that your child is being used to sell papers not because people care but simply because the media knows it'll make them some money today but tomorrow they couldnt give a shit?

Well, this to me is no different then any other news involving a person, a gun and another person.

All the same really. As in bad, but not life changing.

Ofcourse it owuld be better this didn't happen, but it does and there's really sh*t all to do to "eradicate" it. Sad fact or a way of modern life really.

Not trying to troll here, just saying how it makes(or lack of) me feel.

Exactly, stuff like this happens in Dafur every day but no one seems to care about that. Thats why i cba to give stuff like this more attention than the 'well you might want to consider changing the gun laws' thought...

If people dont care about that, why should they care about this?

And everyday the killings in Iraq are on the BBC news page they are rported. But tell me what you think the papers and news would achieve if you like it or not people stop caring. Your average person who dose not pretend to be deeply affected by the war in Iraq. What could the news change? Lets report about a suicide bombr killing his own people in Iraq today because that will force everyone to leave Iraq and the war to stop? I do think its as bad as people getting killed in the states but after a year of nearly daily news about suicide bombings it is hard to care about it.

But i would say if you really cared about people getting killed rater than just taking another shot at the war in Iraq you would have mentioned all the child soilders that kill each other daily in Africa but no only Iraq gets mentioned. Are people in Iraq worth more than kids in Africa?

I think he is using Iraq as that is a specific example where the media (especially in the US) will specifically try to play down or ignore reports of civilian deaths.

Well.. a school is actually a really good target to blow up as a terrorist, easy access, easy way to hide a bomb in a briefcase or bag so nobody will notice and blowing up a school will cause loads of terror.
It's kinda hard(er) to get a bomb or any kind of explosion device near important person for the country anyway.

Have you seen the office??? Cause that sounded exactly like Garreth:touch:

On topic: Such insane thing to happen, and i guess it wasnt the last time either:(

Title is wrong though, he doesn't blame videogames. He blames videogames, movies, a violence-glorifying culture IN COMBINATION WITH an unstable personality, that you get a dangerous mix.

Videogames would very unlikely be the sole cause. I don't believe there's any sole cause even, but videogames, like movies, easy attaintment of weaponry, it will very likely have atleast some influence in the whole package. It's just one of the many things that stack up

well in scope of "what could the news change" just look to Cohens "Folk devils and moral panics" examining the medias role in public policy and treatment of black/afro-caribean people in the early 80s at the hands of the police. The medias influence is huge and to report only one side distorts peoples views of reality, if they reported daily the wrong doings of soldiers, or suicide bombers or the IRA or gorilla fighters rather than "today look at this isnt this shocking and horrible" then the next day not even following it up or searchin for truths rather than sales then maybe they could use that influence for good rather than money.

Just look at the Litvinenko story a few months back, for a couple of weeks the story was front page news, all claims of trying to figure out what happened and pointing the finger at htis person then that, and in the end they didnt follow it up because they didnt care anymore, they only cared because the whole "spy gets killed" sold papers but in reality they dont really give two shits about why he's dead or his family or the implications of what happened.

Oh and on the point of one childs death to another, i already stated that each death is a tragedy and the circumstances surrounding it can be even more so tragic, and why stop at africa why not look at swet shop workers in china, gorilla fighters in the congo that are told to cut themselves and put gunpowder in their wounds to put them on edge and mroe aggressive as theyre sent in to kill and slaughter, or how about the children and people of the slums in rio de janeiro who're attacked by the police and drug lords and criminals while the government still doesnt recognise the flavailas as settlements.

Surely if the media reported on these issues rather than "PRINCE WILLIAM DUMPS GIRLFRIEND!" or "BECKHAM KICKS FOOTBALLS!" some real good come be brought about rather than feeding peoples apathy by drawing their attention away and rather just giving them another page 3 enhanced plastic modern day "goddess".

Surely you must accept that there is something fundamentally wrong with the mass media that fills so much of our world.

Just thinking; for a country/populas that believes everyone should have guns, why are they so quick to restrain other nations from achieving nuclear weapons?

If they so strongly believe that all being armed would reduce crime why dont they believe that all having nuclear weapons would reduce war? Bah politricks!

Talking of the Iraq war (just as an example) all we ever hear about is the suicide bombings, yet the news that the puppet government we installed there is routinely killing members of its own population, simply because they are Suni or Shi'it (I can't remember which), never makes the news, yet that is the cause of the suicide bombings. If one population wasn't so repressed by their own government, then most of the killings in Iraq wouldn't happen, yet do you hear about if on the news? never, cause it doesn't suit the paper's or the government's purpose to say that we might be ultimately responsible for bad things happening.

This is not about Computer games , The Iraq war or Heavy metal music ...

Fact is a 23 year old gawky looking Korean guy got rejected by an 18 year old girl for thinking that she was interested in him instead of her just being civil towards him , In my job people shout in my face every day and say things to me that would make me want to walk down the street and Buy a Gloc in my local tesco ... Thing is , I live in a country where i would have to go through so many questions and licencing forms that by the time im halfway to tesco i have already forgotten what im pissed about and go to the cinema instead :D

Americans

I don't know where you got this but with every Suicide bombing comes a video form a fanatic group and they have all pretty much said the same thing. Get your troops out of the holly land.

I have never even seen anything suggesting it is because the new goverment are commiting Genocide. And as we have established that the press here only prints what will sell news papaers i think one hint of the new goverment doing the same thing we slapped Sadam for and it would be all over the papers as that is what sells them.

Funny actually, looking at the pictures and videos he took before the shooting, of him posing with guns in both hands and his hat on backwards etc, I thought "He looks like some character out of a video game".

I wonder how long it will take someone [sarcasm]important[/sarcasm] to make that connection, and take the whole "it was movies/music/games that made him do it" argument to the next level.
