This hate for random leadership figures.

It's not like Nancy Pelosi has done anything... Extreme in her career to justify all this hatred, it's mental!
In their eyes she is one of the leaders of the cannibal-paedocracy.

Disinformation and conspiracy theories have real-world consequences.

It will take years, decades even to get these nutters to stop believing such nonsense.

Oh year these guys are on a par with ISIS on brainwashing.

They're white & western though, that's why they're not locked up in with their families.

it's predictable
FTFY.

Can you think of a time when people who have been under long term economic hardship have been exploited by unscrupulous leaders and then this spilled over into violence?

I think it'll be harder than that. Once things become entrenched then you pretty much have to wait for those humans to die off.

Look how that works even amongst scientists - sometimes it takes the old guard to die before new ideas can really take off, even if there's evidence for it.

The danger is that we'll sit here shouting at the nutters and trying more and more authoritarian methods of controlling their idiocy - which in the end will simply entrench their views and give them something to hang their hattery on when trying to convince others (like the massive own-goal of banning trump (like our faux-reporter youtube friend eloquently put)).

What we need to do is fix the structural economic problems first. There's clear and obvious correlation between poverty-inducing economic events (such as the economic crash) and people voting for dumb things / authoritarian leaders.

The Democrats own most of the things now - and my concern is that unless they outperform massively against their historical performance we'll be just as fucked four years from now. Dem performance is a woeful shitshow of increasing inequality and a bit of patching around the sides - i.e. they do fuck all of real, genuine, life-changing importance that has a substantial effect. (Everything they ever manage to achieve is mere breadcrumbs, whilst inequality continues to sky-rocket).

If they can't fix that. I.E. Make substantial inroads without the usual trick of undermining constitutionally held freedom that the left loves to try (they need to leave the gun lobby well alone - they've got much bigger fish to fry than gun deaths and if they want to "heal" the country they need to leave off the red-flag policies and do stuff everyone can get behind).

Trump is done. There'll be a hangover - but it's over to you Democrats. Show us what you've got. ;)

This isn't an economic issue. If it was these people would have walked away from Trump years ago because he delivered fuck all. This is not only ideological, but when you the get to the QAnon stuff its outright bonkers. And the Dems could deliver nectar and ambrosia and turn America into utopia in the next four years and it wouldn't matter to these people, because it would be also helping libs, snowflakes and n*ggers and they can't have that. They want the America where they were top dogs, and it isn't coming back.

So she names the terrorists first above the cops. Does not blame her husband in any way. Look at things from all perspectives? WHAT THE FUCK.

Just catching up on the Parler data dump hack. How fucking funny. Everything that was "deleted" is still available to download and all videos/pictures contain metadata (it is not stripped by the platform). Oh how they are going to be fucked over by this. Jan 7th, quick delete everything. LOL.

Intention is to put it online at archive.org shortly.

I disagree here. People's susceptibility to idiocy increases in line with economic destitution. There are clear parallels throughout history that show this very clearly.

Economic destitution forms a base, from which people who are unhappy with their lot then start looking around for reasons why life is shit. Then they hang onto whatever they find. Whether it's the Jews, the niggers, QAnon paedo martians, whatever - people start to hunt for things that explain why, despite their hard work, life is hard.

I'm not saying that these things don't happen anyway, as they clearly do. But for it to get to fever-pitch (Brexit, Trump) an economic base needs to be there first.

Populist idiots thrive on economic problems. Whether that's our politicians or some dumb conspiracies. They're always there, but they become much more of a danger to society when society is weakened by economic circumstances.

It may be a factor for some. As might Murdoch, Koch and Russian Propaganda. Plus Facebook and Youtube algorithms. Plus the politeness and false balance of most media in rarely straight-up calling stuff bullshit for fear of offending its believers.

It all adds up.

Wowzers. Didn't know about that!

But really - how is this anything but just another bad thing? People are going to have idiots turning up at their houses. Instead of "rightwing" idiots, it'll be "leftwing" idiots. And violence could ensue.

Absolutely it does add up.

But fever-pitch on these things, historically, are when people are hurting economically. Which people have been for over a decade now.

Most of it was archived before AWS shutdown Parler. The fallout could be violence but I doubt it. What we will see are lots of senior GOP members shitting themselves.

Others will be out of jobs pretty soon, fuck them. They knew what they were doing is against the normals of today's society.

2008 didn't just have the financial crisis. Twitter and Facebook took off then. Mass peer-to-peer communication hasn't been around that long to be gamed by bad-faith actors looking to drive wedges between people.

Online echo chambers really started about 10 years ago.

Don't disagree with that @Wij - but if you look at the 1929 crash and what that meant for WWII...

...economics is the underlying driver. Twatter and Facebook are like the red bull of personalized outrage, yep indeed. But unless you've got the fertile ground in the first place...

I don't think you could say this would never have happened without economic hardship / inequality. There's a lot of factors; none are essential.

Well, this is technically social media, sort of but other than our resident fuckwit, most of us don't spout endless bullshit about conspiracy theories and the like. But even that is extremely tame compared to what these loons have been putting on Twitter, Facebook and then Parlour once banned from the previous.

Again, disagree.

If you look back in the last hundred years or so - when have populist asshats gained significant destabilising power without economic crises?

Based on those obvious examples it's clear that desparate people do silly things and turn to stupid stuff for answers. People who are comfortable are much less likely to do so in the numbers required to become destabilizing.

In 2008 and 2012 they elected a black man not a populist. It's almost as if the populist being elected was a reaction to the black man being elected.
