...and the statues of him have nothing to do with slavery, whereas the ones of Robert E Lee do. That's the difference, context. There was some tosspot on the Guardian this morning talking about knocking down Nelson's Column because he supported slavery, entirely missing the point that his statue celebrates his achievement in saving the country rather than his politics. Lee tried to protect a slave state and failed.

The represent lots of things, slavery being one of them. Very few politicians, presidents or generals are whiter than white, especially in American history, the vast majority were absolute cunts, for one reason or another.

That's not the point. In the case of the Bobby Lee statues they were specifically raised as statues to the Confederacy, not the man (some of the inscriptions on them are pretty telling about that). Its all part of Jim Crow and segregation, which the north and the Federal government turned a blind eye to for a 100 years.

The graph shows that a great many confederate statues were raised when those Jim Crow laws were first enacted. More were built during the 1950s and 1960s, during American's civil rights period.

They're basically a giant "fuck you" to black people. I'm not surprised they've been removed.

Personally I think it is better to keep a reminder of the history, good or bad. Obliterating old monuments is bit of a IS mentality and a slippery slope. Where will it stop, tear down all churches, given their roles in some pretty shady history it could be next on the list.

Although agree the ones raised in 1950-60's should go. That was an act of defiance.
