"The problem today goes deeper than the victory of the right-wing populism of Trump and Farage, though the xenophobic nature of their regimes are profoundly troubling. The failure of left-wing populism leaves democracy in an even more desperate state."

lol, absolute garbage.

Left-wing populism and its ideals are just failed ideas that survive within universities and other institutions that don't need to succeed or produce ideas/theories that actually work to survive. Occasionally it leaks out, the liberal media drool over it for a time, then it is roundly rejected by the general public - because we are not idiots and the only people 'equality of outcome'/socialism/social justice etc appeal to are losers and naive/entitled students & young people who want their 'fair share'.
“Since this is an era when many people are concerned about 'fairness' and 'social justice,' what is your 'fair share' of what someone else has worked for?”
- T. Sowell
No sane person is going to vote to enable ideal that further delegates the produce/outcome of their efforts to the state, which as Friedman said, is just people spending other people's money on other people - without doubt the least effective way get any sort of value.

'Right-wing populism', as it has been labelled, has YUUUGE support and increasing political power in the USA. Britain, the Netherlands, Australia (to name a few). These dopey critics that throw around words - racism, xenophobia, islamophobia, sexism (among others) in attempt to label or brand the movement as hateful or fear-mongering are just digging their own graves. There are far more normal people than SJWs/Marxists and the normal people are tired of PC thought police BS and the fear of being labelled or discriminated against should they openly speak out against the neo-progressive liberal narrative.

“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”
-T. Roosevelt

Still relevant today and Trump/Farage on immigration very much echoes it, however in the modern world the issue is less simple due to social security systems and the ease of long distance travel. Developed nations cannot accommodate or elevate the standard of living of every human on the planet to that of the 'west'. A standard and quality of living that nation states exist to protect and improve upon and which is the product of generations of work. Migration controls exist for a reason, this is that reason.

I just keep telling the guys at work that for there to be great presidents, there must be awful ones.

Quite right, America had to endure almost 7 years of the awful community organiser to set in motion the run of the BIGLY winner now days away from assuming power.

It does make me laugh when people try to claim "the left" is the nicer, friendlier side of the political spectrum. How many people did left wing governments put to death in the 20th Century again?

Oh yeah, about 94 million.

That's not the point though. Trump claimed the polls were 'so wrong'. Whilst you are right they were wrong they weren't many percentage points wrong. When Trump says that these polls might be 'so wrong' too then a few percentage points would still leave him with a fucking shitty approval rating.

/Edit: that was supposed to be a reply to andeh's post on the last page. Buh...

Well he isn't wrong though, the polls are generally a load of bollocks. It is what happens when discussion is shut down in favour of screaming insults. People just say what they think people want to hear just to get rid of them, then vote however they were going to vote in the first place.

Polls not accurate does not imply polls are total bollocks.

There's a common characterisation here that people who oppose Trump are lefty/SJW types. That's not even close to being true. It's just creating an easy target to argue against.

"You don't support our con man, racist, rapist, ignoramus? Go back to your safe-spaces Marxist!!"

Well, when they predict the opposite of what happened...and generally the very pleased with themselves, were generally very pleased with themselves...it means they are pretty much useless. 2 of the biggest upsets in western political history has happened in the last 6 months or so. Both times the pollsters faceplanted.

mmm. but the narrative of the popular media and the idiotic new left is that anyone who voted for Trump, or Brexit are racist, xenophobe blah blah blah which is clearly not true either. All people who claim as much are doing is demonstrating how little they have learned and how far away we are from sanity (as a society)

They predicted narrowly one way and they went narrowly the other. Not covering themselves in glory recently no but hardly the same as picking percentages out of a hat.

Nope but we are where we are and one of the reasons we are where we are is that people are afraid to say what they think because the moment they do they get jumped on.

The natural position of any human is self preservation, when shit goes south they will act (or vote) how they think will most benefit them. This isn't a new, it is essentially hard coded into us. If the only opposition they get to their natural reaction is screaming and shouting all it will do is further that belief, or position.

There was no counter argument, not a real counter argument anyway, just lots of very comfortable thank you very much people whining about losing their personal wealth or insulting everyone.

Unfortunately for all my pro Trump rhetoric..actually its more sit back and enjoy the carnage.
A awful lot of Trump supporters from certain areas of America fell for his evangalist style and no matter how much he fucks up, he'll just hold a rally and admit to being human..say he's sorry..all is forgiven.

An awful lot also only get their news from Infowars and Facebook pages with patriot in the name. I've had conversations with them where they are entirely convinced that Hillary runs child sex parties and that the Clinton Foundation only gave 5% to charity and the rest to their pockets. Trump will never lose their votes.

Enjoy paying to walk along your privatised road to get to your privatised hospital. What's that, your house is on fire? Have you kept your privatised fire service payments in order? What, someone is threatening to rob you? Call your private security, oh no you only have the bronze package so they won't get there for 6 hours. Should have got the gold package. Never mind, you're close to retirement so you've that to look forward to. Except your private pension company has just failed, and considering you let the market rule and voted against a state pension, you're going to have to go into the workhouse to pick ropes apart. Once you've sold your house, that is, to pay for it. And don't expect your family to help either, they're like you, they don't like any aspect of socialism so they've told you it's your fault for making the wrong market-based decisions and fucked off into the sunset. The sunset that's fouled by all the shit in the air, caused by a complete lack of regulation because the market doesn't really care about air quality. Why would they? There's no smog in the Caymen Islands.

Yes, that would explain the complete lack of privatised Health Care for our socialist cousins in Europe, such as France or Scandinavia.

Oh. Oh wait.

Which is no more ridiculous than meaning that the left is automatically Marxism, which is the post Tom responded to. The ridiculousness of entrenched positions means there's pretty much no point in these conversations anymore; if you're left leaning you're automatically a beardy millennial SJW who thinks Chairman Mao was great, and if you're right leaning you're a racist xenophobic uber-capitalist who'd sell his own grandmother.

Think I'll pass on these conversations from now on.

But, they exist. Like all those mongoloids that wanted Clinton in power simply because she had a cunt.

I've been bashing these "entrenchments" that's been going on for a while. It's annoying as fuck for once, hearing and seeing people revert to name-calling, and media fucking about and cheering everyone on. Quiet an echo chamber going on and it's damaging to a healthy debate. One side throwing shit and the other defending their shit with tooth and claws -

Example is the Swedish justice minister defending the increase in sexual related assault crime saying "it's the same as it was 20 years ago" with regards to the "far right" claiming it be due to immigration. So, instead of getting shit done, there's a huge focus on left vs right debate and common sense is out the window and people are meeming on twitter instead.

Fuck!

But, they exist. Like all those mongoloids that wanted Clinton in power simply because she had a cunt.

Well, i think most people believe she would've done an absolutely terrific job. I believe she would only serve to escalate this (i reserve the right to not be held accountible for the legitimacy of The Sun)

US Army moves 2,500 tanks, trucks and military vehicles into Europe in biggest troop transfer since Cold War

But Trump, seriously. Media fucked itself over bigtime by getting Clinton instead of Bernie for the democratic presidential nominee (now THAT felt rigged seeing the popularity of Sanders)
