"The problem today goes deeper than the victory of the right-wing populism of Trump and Farage, though the xenophobic nature of their regimes are profoundly troubling. The failure of left-wing populism leaves democracy in an even more desperate state."
lol, absolute garbage.
Left-wing populism and its ideals are just failed ideas that survive within universities and other institutions that don't need to succeed or produce ideas/theories that actually work to survive. Occasionally it leaks out, the liberal media drool over it for a time, then it is roundly rejected by the general public - because we are not idiots and the only people 'equality of outcome'/socialism/social justice etc appeal to are losers and naive/entitled students & young people who want their 'fair share'.
“Since this is an era when many people are concerned about 'fairness' and 'social justice,' what is your 'fair share' of what someone else has worked for?”
- T. Sowell
No sane person is going to vote to enable ideal that further delegates the produce/outcome of their efforts to the state, which as Friedman said, is just people spending other people's money on other people - without doubt the least effective way get any sort of value.
'Right-wing populism', as it has been labelled, has YUUUGE support and increasing political power in the USA. Britain, the Netherlands, Australia (to name a few). These dopey critics that throw around words - racism, xenophobia, islamophobia, sexism (among others) in attempt to label or brand the movement as hateful or fear-mongering are just digging their own graves. There are far more normal people than SJWs/Marxists and the normal people are tired of PC thought police BS and the fear of being labelled or discriminated against should they openly speak out against the neo-progressive liberal narrative.
“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”
-T. Roosevelt
Still relevant today and Trump/Farage on immigration very much echoes it, however in the modern world the issue is less simple due to social security systems and the ease of long distance travel. Developed nations cannot accommodate or elevate the standard of living of every human on the planet to that of the 'west'. A standard and quality of living that nation states exist to protect and improve upon and which is the product of generations of work. Migration controls exist for a reason, this is that reason.
