Hi

Not criticising moderators in this statement, but enquiring as to whether a change is in the limelight.

I have spent a lot of time browsing the technical forums, and general forums. It is so well moderated and users there (not just mods) don’t tolerate nonsense or general non-contributing spam. I understand that in forums the community tends to evolve on its own, although it seems like a far cry from how the RvR forums of DAOC are.
Where people post '+1', or 'whine' or other 1 sentence nonsense and in no way contributing to posts , and instead of being discouraged others go and do the same.

Are there plans to crack down on this? I don’t know what goes on your side, so have no idea at all if multitudes of people are banned for such things. But the fact it continues suggests that more could be done.

The only reason i write to you is i have seen two sides to BW recently between different forums. One where people can do what they want, another where people seem to have a happier co-existence together.

I know this is due to the fact that DAOC is a competitive game, whereas on tech help forums people ask and offer help, and general chat is basically grab a beer from the fridge after work and chat.

Is there any chance moderators could set more definitive rules on forum use, and thoroughly follow them?

I don’t know if this stretches mods capabilities. But I have copied this message to you onto the RvR forums of Excalibur. Where either what I have said will be highlighted by others behavior or you will see other peoples suggestions.

Well i dno but some post could be summed up by only sayin "whine". Sure if the case is that u want em to do a whole sentence like "so much whine in that post" for example.
For me it doesnt really matter tbh.

Point is, if its the case where someone starts a nonsense subject it shouldn't be tolerated. People shouldn't have to type whine, which does nothing other than to encourage it where it isnt needed

and by +1 one i dont mean people that solely type '+1' but 'whine' still appears on an hourly basis for an example. All I am saying is, mods delete topics that serve no point, and if people dont like a thread, dont reply! reply to something that interests you.

Although you sort off hint at a reason for nonsense posting, care to suggest a solution as opposed to cause?

remove 250 posts from ranking instead of ban be more effective you think? ( i dont even know if its possible but contributions welcome) Judging by the post count statement i mean.

btw, reason for post: i think more people side (a silent party) with me than there are nonsense posters, + 1 posters whatever the term.

We've been getting a lot stricter with the +1 posters recently, lots of warnings have been fired off, a few post counts have been reset to ZERO, and someone is about to get suspended for continuing to spam, so don't think it's not being dealt with.

That said, it's very hard to deal with something so endemic. The general forums and the Tech forums have a relatively small core of posters, and they are on average older and bitterer than the Daoc posters. Self moderation pretty much works there. I moderate both forums, and you get maybe one reported post a week in the general forums. Compare that to about 70 a week for the DAOC forums when it was hectic, and that's just what does get reported, and you can see it has a totally different dynamic. If someone went into the general forums and just posted +1, people simply wouldn't tolerate it. Here, you get more people following suit.

Personally, I loathe the +1ers. I think they retard the IQ of the forums, and if you have nothing better to do than just sit around making random noises then you shouldn't be anywhere near anything electrical in the first place, but that's just my opinion.

If you are annoyed by someone spamming, say so. Tell them, report the post as well. We'll do what we can.

Damini merely replied to the thread with a worthy read. If you want to point at someone try me as i brought up topic, all damini did was give a point of view from mods + his/her whatever own point of view.

report spam, report spammers, tell them you have done it so others are aware that it is becoming intolerable. Mods will act on your reports if not before you.

every post has a 'report this post to a moderator' button give an explanation

i.e contributes nothing other than farming posts

I agree with you Sleet, I think there is far too much "+1", "whine", "cry more noob", <insert latest childish catchphrase here> on the rvr forums atm. Normally I just ignore it, though perhaps doing that is allowing it to continue. I will try to make sure and report any offensive/spam posts in future to try and help clear out this forum as there are (beneath the egotism, spam and flaming) some threads worth reading.

I agree totally Sleet, what starts out as a discussion or a plea for help from a member of the daoc community can often become a single line argument or a excuse for certain members of the community to polish each others egos and hand each other lolly pops, most threads on the RvR forum degrade into random spam or pointless name calling, Not so bad maybe in the three realm forums, mid/alb/hib but its getting there.

If you read an alleged "discussion thread" and it comprises of five people saying QQ, one saying three kk's and a +1, that's not a discussion, that's an annual meeting of the dull people's tourettes society. Is any new member looking at that going to sign up thinking "Wait, I have something to add to this too!!!" Nope. They're going to think "BW has been eating the lead paint again."

It's very hard to change people's attitudes. I can edit out spam, but editting out the general air of contempt from everything people post is a lot harder. That's something for the community to deal with and address essentially, not for the mods. We can only stick band aids on the worst incidents, or amputate the particularly malignant limbs, we don't really have the ability to polish an entire community.

Trust me, I tried before to make this place shiny happy people land, and it wasn't forth coming.

Who ever said i cared about it not being a flame free enviroment and i normally only tend to flame people who are in need of my wrath, intelligent discussion is few and far between on these forums and its always been the same way, one moral crusader isnt going to change anything aside from kicking up more flames.

The implication being that the +1s aren't really the problem, it's the flames and attitudes that are. Where did I miss? I responded by pointing out that you are hardly rushing around the forums helping old ladies across the road. It's a bit like the BNP pointing out that the problem with britain is racism, or the thieves guild complaining about a rise in crime. You flame as much as the next man, so I found it slightly hypocritical that you turn your Sarcasmometer on me when I talk about spammers. Not once did I accuse you of being a spammer.

And no, I'm not completely up to date with the game. I used to play when I was made a mod, and I don't anymore. But, on that front, you can't win. If you still play, people can get suspicious of your motives and allegiances. If you don't still play, you're out of touch. Ideally, what people want is someone who doesn't play the game, but stays at home just reading all about it in order to be an impartial expert on a forum for a game they aren't allowed to play. To be honest, if someone like that existed and wanted to be a mod, I'd say they were far too damned weird to actually be a mod.

As for helping people well as most will tell you in #daoc i bent over backwards to help people untill the new op's banned me because i took offense at the amount of shit they would throw at anyone who accidently spoke in anything other then "gods owns laungage" English and the blatent noob bashing, i've been an advisor since i came over from the US servers and was always an advisors on them servers since start.

I've helped people on here just to blatently get it thrown back at me and i got sick and tired of being flamed just because my opinion was different to someone elses, so yes now i flame and bait because thats the only thing thats worthwhile anymore.

If a threads got a point and it is sensible then i wont blatently troll it but them threads are one in a million. So dont complain about trolls Damini as they are half your ppulation here.
