Dangerous times. Avoid avoid avoid. I have deleted everything, got myself down to just YouTube, which is the last addiction to kick, and I am doing well with that, I hardly bother now, except a few informative channels.

The only surprising thing about that is they made their intent public and they haven't done it already. The entire AI industry is built on stealing as much proprietary IP content as they can, and then letting the lawyers deal with the fall-out afterwards if they get caught.

It's Amazon; what did people expect?

To be honest - the press coverage was brutal. His face all over it.

I know he was a cunt but I'm not actually that surprised. He may have been the poster boy - but people pushing DEI at all costs should have been fronting for this, rather than him.

Only 1% of professors are black, with a population that is 4.2% black, something isn't quite right there. You don't fix it by forcing square pegs into round holes. Fix the cause of that disparity. Social and cultural issues are the cause, if young black kids (particularly boys) are mostly ignored and left to the gangs, then they aren't going to be getting on the education pathways at an early age.

Only 13% of professors are from working class backgrounds.

Fuck race and sex quotas. That is just more racism and sexism.

You're right that it is social and cultural. But it's also economic. We need to provide more opportunity.

But professors largely come from family structures that are intellectually focussed. This is desireable - because their focus and behaviour, their 'gut reaction' to issues should be to think more. That trait makes them suited to the academic environment.

Dumb DEI representation policies are not only racist, but they promote the wrong sort of people to academia - that is necessarily and correctly a little bit (but not wholly) "ivory tower".

Exceptional people can, and should, make it. We need our economics to enable a wider pool to choose from. But quotas for race and representation should be nowhere near that space - as all of society benefits from the highest intellectual rigour and intense meritocracy.

When we seriously consider arguments about representation for academia all we do is dumb down the whole human endeavour.

It was excessive press coverage, the ironic thing is that the right-wing media was so ferocious about it being a DEI hire that it made me wonder if they would have made as much out of it if it was a white bloke who lied/exaggerated.

Of course they wouldn't. It would have been reported but probably with a completely different tone.

The white male wouldn't have made it there because of racist and sexist DEI policies.

The outrage here isn't about that he lied - it's about multiple people and institutions turning blind eyes to shoehorn a black liar into a position of responsibility because he was black.

He was used as the poster boy and by all accounts happy to be that. So forgive the outrage in the reporting because when millions of white people are discriminated against because of racist policies, when millions of white people get told how institutionally racist tgey are, how they've got so much white privilege, that women, people of colour, disabled people should get jobs ahead of you, because of what they are, instead of what they can do, you're going to have some outpouring of justified rage.

None of the news outlets were racist btw. The guardian led with him as headline I think almost performatively on multiple days, whereas the torygraph and it's ilk actually went easier.

It's more complicated than that; average age of newly appointed university professor in the UK is 50-55, so you have to look back to the ethnography of the 1970s, not today. Black professors would still be underrepresented, but by much less, and Asian professors (9% of current population and professors) are almost certainly overrepresented. Obviously there are foreign born professors that skew the numbers a bit, but that applies to the "white" professors as well.

The Ardy situation is so much worse because if he'd been white the chances of even being considered for a professorship at Cambridge in his mid-twenties would have effectively been zero, even before you get to the obvious inconsistencies in his backstory.

100%.

And the obviousness of it. The biggest crime was the rolling out of an uncritical red carpet and the silencing of critical voices.

I mean the bloke who went after him was a 'race realist' who suggests that some races are intellectually inferior by nature and not by environmental conditions...
