It's more to do with a lack of education with tides rather than people getting out of depth.

Since we already have localised phone alerts, why not do the same thing for people on the coast?

If you can swim, you can float and tread water, waiting for rescue. You expect to be able to do this for hours. If the waves are bad, and you can make half an hour, the lifeboat'll reach you after your other non-swimming friends, instead of drowning themselves, ring the RNLI from the coast.

This is inability to swim. Poor education about costal waters. Lack of understanding of currents. Lack of tidal awareness and knowledge.

It's classic lack of education - mental and physical.

Since we already have localised phone alerts, why not do the same thing for people on the coast?

Tides rise pretty quickly in parts of the coast, I can understand why people get caught out - I remember going to Brancaster as a kid and the amount of people that get caught out by going to the wreck and then being unable to get back is pretty staggering, and no, it's not just brown people, it's people that don't live near the coast and don't have an understanding of the idea of tides - we teach it in secondary, but never from a safety aspect. I bet they do at coastal schools though which makes no sense, it should be the other way around if anything as coastal people are more likely to know through parents etc.

I've also never been in a situation where i'm fully clothed at the beach + in water + panic, so I don't know how I'd respond.

I knew this would be your response to getting notifications - why not though? Is it really that offensive to your sense of freedoms to get a 'Tides coming, you should probably move.' message? We have pretty fast moving tides compared to other parts of the world too. Hence the illegal cockle farmers that got killed in the past.

If people do not understand the dangers of swimming either in the sea or a river they have no right to be anywhere near it. The dangers of water should be treated similar to the dangers of the road. You learn and understand the dangers and what not to do when near or in.

I remember going to the beach when young with my brother/sisters and our friends along with Mum and one of her friends. We were only allowed into the water halfway up our shins unless a parent was with us, we were not allowed out of sight of our Mum and when I have been to the coast with my children it was the same rules for them and my daughter uses the same rules for her children.

Because, getting nagged by a nanny state aside, 3 seconds of thought can give you a pile of reasons why it'd be hugely expensive and unworkable, and a little bit more would tell you why it'd also be a total waste of time.

Making sure every single child can swim by the time they left school would probably be cheaper, and certainly more effective.

What, every six hours? How close to the beach do you need to be to get this message? What about people who live near the sea? Do you get it if you're just driving past? Or walking? Or on your bike? How many times do you get this repeated six-hourly message on holiday before you block it?

And how do you do localisation? Where is the tide coming in? On the Isle of Anglesey alone the tides, currents, direction and timing of such varies by more than an hour over it's 22-mile width. And they change with winds. And the fucking orientation of the sun and moon mean they're different heights and strengths. And is it just tides, or the conditions of the water? If you're dumb enough to not know the tide comes in, you must be dumb enough to not go for a paddle in a hurricane if you can't swim?

I mean, there's a load more reasons why this is utterly retarded.

Hence the illegal cockle farmers that got killed in the past.

Unfortunately people don't realise just how powerful tides/waves can be. Not even Olympic swimmers can escape their power, people don't realise that though and think "Nah, I can swim"
