Sometimes I think these groups look to the After Life for inspiration 'now could you stand over there with the hammer and the laptop?'

I got slated for pointing that out.

I still disagree with it.

I haven't read who's made the report but I suspect it's another 'see, we're not racist' thing.

I've worked at one of the best schools in the UK which is full of (yes, full of 'em ;)) first generation Indians where they have massive aspirations and do really well. I don't think the school not the Government can take much credit for their success tbh.

I've also worked at a middle class Indian School where they massively underperform because the overwhelming attitude is 'do you know who my dad is?'.

And I've worked at mainly white working class schools where the aspiration is extremely low.

Then you've got mega funding for London super schools for a very long time which the rest of the UK has been very jealous of.

In all honesty I think that kids who come to the UK half way through their education are the worst off, when I were at school kids like that would be taken out of normal lessons to work on their English, now it seems there's very little of that provision available, I even had kids telling me yesterday how weird it was that a new Greek kid was sitting in French lessons when he couldn't even speak English, waste of time.

You can't target education, it must be equal for all. Regardless of the good intentions behind it.

What does this have to do with that article? Did you actually read it?

I still disagree with it.
  • At GCSE, in 2019, 18% of white British pupils on free meals achieved grade 4 in English and maths, compared with 23% for the average for pupils on free meals
  • For university entry, 16% of white British pupils on free meals get places, compared with 59% of black African pupils on free meals, 59% of Bangladeshi pupils on free meals and 32% of black Caribbean pupils on free meals.
Facts and figures trump personal experience.

Vote Tory people!:

Don't be loud when you protest. It's a nuisance. And if people on this forum have taught me anything, they've taught me that protestors should definitely never ever be a nuisance.

And for some reason, the Tories feel the need to change the law about single people protesting. Because you know how dangerous and inconvenient single people protesting about things is.

Apparently Billy eyelash mouthed something racist when she was 13 and now has to offer an deep and sincere apology and is very sorry and it will never happen again.

She was 13, who cares.

My school was one of the worst in our area according to the ranking tables, so all the jolly foreigners that couldn't afford private education (including me) got dumped there, as they always had space. In my 3 1/2 years there, we had the following join midway through secondary school: 2 Turkish kids, a Dutchie, a Cuban, an Indian, a German, and I think some refugees from a French speaking country, maybe Cameroon or Sierra Leone, can't quite remember.

I was a year ahead in my Danish school system, so I dropped down a year to be with my own age group, which was good from a language perspective, and I think they dropped kids down a year when they could get away with it after that. The 2 Turkish kids joined at the end of year 9, and were in my year, and the girl did OK, but the boy was always kinda screwed, as he didn't take school serious, and the teachers had no time for people who didn't want to help themselves. The Dutch girl was 2 years below me, she was pretty smart, but struggling with the same problems I had with understanding the British school system, so my English teacher asked me to volunteer a few lunchtimes to help out, take her through the arcane school rules, how homework worked, maintaining a daybook, all stuff that was perfectly normal for a British kid, but totally alien to anyone else. I volunteered for reading lessons twice a week, so she got assigned to me there too, but after 2-3 months, she didn't need the extra help, and I got assigned someone else. The Cuban kid was an odd case, as he spoke zero English, the only people who could communicate with him were the language teachers, who all spoke Spanish. He joined at end year 7, so he was lucky, he had 2-3 years to pick things up before GCSE's began. All that said, I do think I got more help because I arrived halfway through the secondary education process. I was never taken aside to sit on my own, but teachers were fairly patient in explaining things.

I think GB News is doing a brilliant job.

Of showing just what happens when you crew a TV station with amateurs and non-professionals. Of what happens when you don't use PSC/ENG crews for your live links, relying instead on bottom of the ladder reporters with iPhones, iRigs, Radio Shack microphones and zero lighting.

It's fucking hilarious how technically shit it is.

I've always rated Andrew Neil since I think he is a good interviewer, but I've not watched GB news and have little intention to watch it. I mean I read some where that they've got Dan Wootton who last time I ever caught a glimpse of was doing entertainment or something on Lorraine.

To be honest most of the on-air "talent" are either at the last chance saloon (Alistair Stewart) or eminently punchable rent-a-mouths. The only one that surprises me a bit is Neil Oliver, but having read a bit about his activities over the last year, I guess not, although unlike most of the others he still comes over as sincere.

Even the studio looks shit. The lighting is horrible. All top-down, no doubt to save time and money. Hardly any key lights, backlights, just top-down fill. No wonder you have to squint to see their faces. And the aircon unit in that photograph shows it isn't a purpose-built facility, so whoever is in charge is always going to struggle to get good results.

Honestly, if they're doing it on the cheap that's fine. Who gives a fuck about production quality in a news service?

What they need to be doing is different news.

*Not that I've watched it - I don't watch any TV news at all any more. Horrid stuff.

Talking about comedians with my boss and George Carlin came up and I've forgotten how funny he is. That's my day of background noise sorted.

My Nan just died.

Weirdly I'm not massively upset about it.

Probably because I was the first on the scene when she broke her hip just before the pandemic and after that I knew she was in a final phase of her life which wasn't any joy.
