So I need a new phone. The Sony Xperia Z5 has never really been a favourite of mine, and now needs to go. I'd like to stick with Android and have been looking at the One Plus 5.

Any suggestions or recommendations on newer phones? I'm tired of the lag my current phone if providing me with, so looking for something top end

My recommendation for androids is simple, either buy one of the latest high end ones or if you dont want to shell out buy a flagship from precious gen, never buy the cheap curremt gen phones they are often worse than 2-3 generations back of flagships

The one plus <insert number here> are nice but the company has been caught out cheating in benchmarks so dont believe all the scores you see

Im currently using an S7 edge and tbh im still not 100% sold, the edge feels like a gimmick, the phone itself is nice amd pretty but it being glass on both sides had to get a big clunky case for it (recommend an impact resistant one to deal with kids :p )

My perfect phone..plastic body, transflective screen, removable battery, changeable plastic screen.
And doesnt go full volume dunk dunk when the battery is low, without you having to turn down that part of the volumes.

The new Google Pixel will be out in a few months. I suggest you wait for it. I have the original Pixel XL, it is a superb phone. Superb camera, no bloatware to think about, immediate software updates from Google, Google Assistant - it's fantastic.

For some odd reason it isn't available in Denmark from what I can understand :(

I agree with all of that except the camera. It's a good camera but only compared to other Android phones. The iPhone still wins in that regard by a big margin.

That just software or optics?

A combination of both. If Samsung make some spanking new hardware optics Google then has to update Android to support it and expose the features via API's and the camera software then to use it. That can take years.

Since Apple control everything end to end, hardware and software, it's much easier and quicker for them to implement.

The quality of BBC comedy bar things that have been running for years is so fucking awful.

The Mash Report - watch it, I challenge you to laugh.

The Mash Report, Series 1: Episode 2

Nish Kumar is like the least funniest person, it's just like 'oh I'm brown' and doesn't actually do anything with it.

Shame both Apple and Samsung go to the same company for their Camera Modules.

I've seen reviews of the Galaxy S8/8+ that say it has the best camera of any smart phone. That's not "only compared to other Android phones".

Quick google: Best Smartphone Cameras 2017

On the other hand:
Which smartphone has the best camera?

Shame both Apple and Samsung go to the same company for their Camera Modules.

Way to completely ignore what Zarjazz said; its the software, optics and hardware in combination that makes the difference.

I honestly have no idea which is "best" as I've seen arguments that iPhone 7 Plus is best, and various Android devices as well (and for a while WinPhones too), often from so-called standards regimes. My view would be that if you want a really good camera, buy a camera.

Random cat picture from my phone. Zero setup time, daylight only. The Pixel very rarely takes a poor quality image. It's just a superb bit of kit.

If you want super photos to photoshop or whatever, buy a camera.

If you want medium quality photos get a samsung or a pixel.

If you want decent snaps to stick on facebook, get any old phone

Guys, if you're comparing camera phones and penis lengths, use dpreview's controlled studio cameraphone test that allows you to judge sharpness / colours / noise / quality easily.

Google Pixel XL added to mobile studio test scene comparison

I'll let those of you who need to eat humble pie do so. :)

I have a Pixel XL and love it so it's not like I'm biased :) But honestly if I compare pictures taken by other peoples iPhones they simply look better In My Opinion.

So many different things factor into what makes an image "better" - saturation? dynamic range? sharpness? contrast? Generally speaking, if you take the same image and saturate it slightly and show it to someone and say "which one is better?" then they'll most likely select the more saturated one on face value, even if the saturation does not represent the image as the photographer intended. Modern smartphones will take a very satisfactory and printable image in bright conditions, it's the lower light performance that interests me the most - does it have image stabilisation, does it have a larger aperture for more light, how does the autofocus perform in low light levels.

If you're into using your phone for photography, I recommend Snapseed. It has nice filters on it that can add some scratch and grit. Here's a couple i took with the iPhone 7+
