So it would appear that we have stolen one of the neighbour's cats. Not sure if you remember but when we first moved into this house about 18 months ago, on the first day we moved in a small tabby cat walked in the front door and straight back out the back again, and ever since that point he seemed particularly keen on coming in. We kept him out for 6 months or so until last summer, with the back door being open he just let himself in and came up to the living room and sat with us, so he was fussed, stayed for a couple of hours then went on his way again. This carried on for a couple of months, we kept watching where he was going, but couldn't identify where he went - asked the neighbours, nothing. No chip, no collar, and he looked very "straggly", very thin and lumpy furred, so we came to the conclusion he was either a stray, or the previous tenants had left him here, so we started looking after him properly.
Fast forward 9 months and one of the neighbours has accosted us across the cul de sac, asking if her cat keeps coming into our house, that she sees him going into most of the houses and only sees him once a week. There are a couple of other cats who try to come in, we mentioned those as well, she said that she thought they were hers as well (surely you'd know if a cat was yours?). She said it was OK as she now knew where to come for him when he has to go into a cattery in May, but she sounded pretty annoyed (not sure if that was at us or the cat).
So Freddies, what to do? We've become very attached to little Catlin, and he's become attached to us (he's sitting on my back right now, purring), but we really have no interest in stealing someone else's cat. We've stopped feeding him for now, and don't let him in as much, but if we open the back door he usually pounces and comes straight in. It would break our hearts to kick him out permanently, so what the hell do we do?
And why do we feel like bad people for helping an abandoned cat?
