If you get an Ivy Bridge motherboard with the i5 CPU you will already have (very competent) onboard graphics so you can do away with the graphics card.

I'm not using it for gaming. Purely internet / word / excel / tv / video / music / light photo editing. Thats pretty much it. I reckon I need a fairly light spec

i5 quad core
8 or 16 GB Ram
WIFI card
Bog-standard mobo
Fairly basic graphics card
1 TB hard
HD monitor

I reckon I could get away with on-board 7.1 surround sound and not need a dedicated sound card

I'm not looking to spend more than £900

Do I really need a SSD for such a basic system?

I think they are worth it tbh. It's games that take up all the space so you would be fine with a 128gb one. Having had one I wouldn't go back to a normal hard drive (other than for storage).

Yeah something like that, but I need a BluRay player and its definitely not for gaming so I really don't need a fancy graphics card. I suppose I should get a SSD. I can't stand all that crunching the hard drive does. Drives me insane. But then again my PC was built 2000 years ago...

SSDs win, by a huge amount. Sub 20 sec boot time and totally silent.

You can customise on that site. You can also ring them up and get them to remove the gpu and get a blu ray player put in.

My wife wants an SSD put up my arse: 20 seconds in the toilet and no fart sounds.
You might as well cut the shaft from my balls.

A man is not a man if he can't make fart noises and spend 20 mins in the bog creating condensation on the windows.
There are only 2 places in the world a man can have a good think: (1) the barbers chair (2) on the toilet.

You can also save £200-300 by building it yourself.

Not an option. I'm a complete dufus when it comes to stuff like that. Too many options, too many websites, too many conflicting opinions on too many forums. I'll order from PC Specialist I think.

I'll go with this

Computer was working fine until a few days ago then it starts going crazy. My money's on the hard drive. I'm going to try to find my windows xp disc and repair the core OS file system (Windows / system32). If that doesn't work I'm going to give some money to someone on the internet and get a new PC

heh your windaes be fucked man. man up and reinstall or man up (buy some new kit) and reinstall.

speaking of SSD's...there is also another way: certain mobo's can take an SSD-like card plugged directly in to it. You can tell windows to use this card as a buffer for HDD access. After a while -allegedly- the OS gets really good at buffering the stuffs you tend to use. I forget it's exact name, but I recently told a mate about it as he's feart of going full SSD and such.

Went really well. The interviewer is from the same educational background as I am, so she knows what my study is about. We talked for 45 minutes, had a few laughes and I really hope that I get it. She told me that she had other people for interviews as well, but that my CV and application was very well written and looked very interesting

*crosses fingers*
They chose someone else.. Fucking sucks!

Exact same thing happened to me :( Had a fantastic interview for my ideal job but didn't get it. Got the news on Friday evening. Gutted. It took them over two weeks to let me know as well the fuckers.

When I run the "sfc /scannow" command, do you think it will accept a Windows XP disc rather than the Windows XP Professional disc which I don't have? The core file system is the same, right? XP Professional just has additional stuff most ppl don't need, right?
