One thing that map shows off is how badly South London is served by transport links.

Indeed. It is also interesting how in this re-imagining the center of the map looks somewhat like the London Underground logo, unless that was a deliberate act by the designer.

I don't understand why it is a map that shows where things are in relation to each other. Otherwise it might as well be a list of stops. Stupid map.

God comes down to you one night and asks if you'd like an elephant's trunk instead of your regular nose for a week. Obviously the trunk will be human flesh coloured and scaled down a tad (it might still reach your knees)

Do you accept?

Week is a bit long, but a day would do.

Its the chalky soil innit? Can't build Underground tunnels in the south-east direction, hence more trains.

Its actually easier to tunnel through chalk as it is more stable than the london clays/marshland in the centre. Theres a lot of rail connections in the south though - maybe it balances out.

As I understand it, its not the ability to tunnel through it that's the problem, its the porosity and instability of the stuff that makes it unsuitable for long tunnels. I seem to remember reading this was one of the big issues that forced the location of the route of the Eurostar.

It is porous its true but its actually very stable - you can make small tunnels in chalk without any need to prop it with supports (See Chiselhurst Caves near Bromley).

They actually sited the channel tunnel so that it went through a harder/clayier band of chalk called chalk marl which is less porous than the white chalk - they had to avoid the underlying gault clay which outcrops at Folkestone since its structurally weak thats why the route diverts north a bit to just south of Dover.

In theory it would if they weren't ran by the single most incapable company in the known universe, South West Trains.
