God comes down to you one night and asks if you'd like an elephant's trunk instead of your regular nose for a week. Obviously the trunk will be human flesh coloured and scaled down a tad (it might still reach your knees)

Its the chalky soil innit? Can't build Underground tunnels in the south-east direction, hence more trains.
Its actually easier to tunnel through chalk as it is more stable than the london clays/marshland in the centre. Theres a lot of rail connections in the south though - maybe it balances out.

As I understand it, its not the ability to tunnel through it that's the problem, its the porosity and instability of the stuff that makes it unsuitable for long tunnels. I seem to remember reading this was one of the big issues that forced the location of the route of the Eurostar.
