Basketball, baseball and american football are all pretty horrible. Basically games devised to allow as much advertising absorbtion as possible by introducing a ton of downtime. At least ice hockey is a fun spectical to watch.

This. Honest to god I know this is going to sound a bit over the top but I think you have breaks in NFL for the same reason you don't have to make a move immediately in Chess. Sure these breaks are the reason that advertisers have raised it to the level of popularity it has achieved, but a well executed play is just as well thought out as any chess move ever was.

-It makes participating companies effectively publicly subsidised.

-It replaces formerly paying jobs with unpaid labour

-Tax paid from those jobs is now just sucked in as profits for participating companies.

The whole thing does the opposite of its stated aims - it destroys paid employment.
