I do English Lit, and I never really get coursework handed back to me for grammar/spelling problems, but if you do, you get a knife thrown at you.

That'll be because speech and text are completely different. Speech has the power of an immediate back and forth, whereby ambiguities can be cleared up quickly. We're also more accepting of vocal errors, since conversation by any human being is flawed in many ways. These flaws stick out more in text than in speech since we're much more accustomed to reading correct text than incorrect ones, so we don't fill in the gaps like with do with verbal communication.

Conversation Analysis (while fucking shit and seriously flawed) is actually very good at highlighting just how flawed speech is, and how we subconsciously deal with and process it.
