the sad thing is that it took MIT students to figure it out -.- whats the world comming to.
why do you think that?Am I missing a joke here?
At first I thought it was doing it at night (like those garden lamps you see in the UK) which would have clearly been bollocks since it's just a water bottle So I thought it was like one of those spaggetti tree videos for April fools.
Then i realised people are calling a water bottle plugged into the roof an "invention".... genius.
Tbh it probably wouldn't throw the light as well as a curved object like the bottle would. The water would cause all sorts of diffraction and whatnot, throwing the light out of the sides of the bottle and making it 3 dimensional unlike a flat something covering a hole in the roof.I just think some of the praise it is getting is way over the top. The comments on the youtube thread praising god etc. are truly baffling.
Being equivalent to a 50W bulb sounds great, but simply having a 20x20cm hole on the roof (based on a very rough calculation) covered by something translucent ( perhaps even the same plastic as the bottle is made from) would be more effective.

And another "tbh", I didn't read any of the comments, any links to religion and praising god can indeed gtfo. It's just a decent bloke who's had a nifty idea, going round trying to help people out and improve their living conditions.
It doesn't half annoy me when religious types invoke the god card at every opportunity.
edit - I don't know if the bleach would help with the light powah or if it would just keep the water clean and clear and make it easier to have the unit sealed (so they don't need to open it up and change the water and risk leaking and stuff). I can't help feeling that we are over-analysing this though!

Not all the time. Just of people I expect to know better. I guess that means either he isn't on my radar or I expect nothing better of him.
