Plus, speaking as a gamer (BW was quite big on games in the day) I'm pretty sure that the graphics card shortage that's been going on for 2 years has been contributed to in no small measure by all this. Paying £600 quid over the odds for a budget gfx card is not something that most people are more than happy to do for the sake of some abstract notion of progress.

As I've said before and said many times, bitcoins and all the others have little use expect for speculation purposes to make money and anyone who claims to be green and mines them is being a hypocrite. Also like Wij I also hate them because they are part of the reason a 3070 graphics card costs as much as buying both the PS5 and Xbox.

I believe here or somewhere else I've also labelled it little better than a Ponzi scheme, although I suspect whatever that article states is better constructed :p

Yeh yeh. JANET cunts were the worst. Bet you collected MP3s too :)

My JANET connect back then was 1Gb. Which thinking about it now is kind of insane - my Uni was only 1 of 2 in the UK at the time with that fast a link because it was a national archive site. I remember playing on some east coast US servers late at night and still having lower ping than the locals.

I thought that said "Barking in the Snow"

A bunch of people walk around in snow for a few hours barking like dogs. Then they turn back and go home.

Mostly off the Uni network back then yeah - lots of very generous people on Network Neighborhood back then :)

Think the fastest download I saw back then was about 1.5Mb/s, which was useful.

It's all becoming so clear why the vast majority of this forum are university educated - I had no idea they were so good back in the boomer days.

Mind you my internet at halls when I were at uni was decent too.

Christ, i remember thinking downloading at about 30kb/s off limewire\kazaa was rapid. Maybe I'm older than I thought.

Believe it or not it was my first internet connection outside of school IT lessons, so I didn't appreciate just how fast it was until I went home and tried Home Highway. That brought me back to earth with a bump.....

Just had my first kill of a magpie. 50 yards. Was attacking my kitten every time he went in the garden. Won't be any more.

Why didn't you just let your cat get older and take out the swoopy boi himself?

First game I ever downloaded was The Sacred Armour of Antirad for the C64, using Compunet. Charged it to the phone bill, which my parents found out about a few weeks later :(

Because magpies are inherently nasty motherfuckers anyway, if any bird can be called evil then it is them, and I want to discourage my cat from killing birds as much as I can. He was trying to climb a tree, they attempt to get animals to climb them, then swoop on them so that they fall.

To be clear, ordinarily I only shoot targets (and I am pretty good at it) it's taken several years of practice to be at the point that I know I can humanely despatch a magpie. I'm not planning on proper hunting any time soon, if ever.

I remember using the argument in a store "we can buy this now for £20 or we can pirate it on the dial up and it will cost £30".

My dad being asked how he had run up a £1000 bill for a quarter by the company, I did it playing AQ2 via BW ISP and had to either limit my play or find less expensive options :p

While Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore loves the smell of napalm in the morning I loved the sound of dial-up any time, naturally I would come to loathe it with time ;)

Didn't virgin or someone buy up the NTL network? They were our provider (1mb!) when I first moved out on my own. We could only get dial up at my mums.

I believe Virgin Media bought them yeah. Them and blueyonder. I do a lot of work for VM and you still see some @ntlworld.com and @blueyonder.com email addresses among the client base.

Think my first ISP was CIX. Bit expensive but always got a good connection - the forums were quite useful too.

A quick Google suggests both CIX and the Forums themselves are still going! CIX
