So, he had consensual sex with some of his acting class students. All adults. They were there voluntarily - it's not like it's a job that they felt they had to shag their boss to keep. They got on well, they decided to have sex.

What, exactly, is wrong with that?

And, as we're apparently trading insults, errrr, snowflake?

University staff can't sleep with students either, it's pretty immoral.

And there's a few reasons why, and it's been about for a while, it's not a new thing to get scared about.

He paid $2.2m in a court case this year over it - suggests that there might be a degree of guiltiness about it.

Oh and the old 'I'm sorry, I'm a sex addict' but 'I didn't set it up to get easy access'

The accusations also include that he promised girls access to the film industry.

Come on man, you can't be serious.

Yeah its not allowed in most places because of potential for mess it causes, if he was sleeping with random women because hes James Franco that would be fine

Well I mean, setting up the James Franco school of acting, then people (who OBVIOUSLY are going to apply *BECAUSE* its James Franco) for him to them come to your lessons and come onto you.

Yeah.

Not taking advantage in the slightest.

There's a long history of university staff sleeping with students. Happened all the time whilst I was at Uni. Nobody was bothered. Can you describe what's "immoral" about it?

If both the staff member and student go into it with open eyes then where's the issue?

In this case:

Coercion is different. After further reading it's clear he paid $2.2m to settle a civil case. That doesn't automatically imply guilt - that could easily be a "I don't want this dragging through the public eye, especially not with the shit that's going on at the moment". And it's civil, certainly not criminal.

But say we lay this asshat aside and go back to the point about University students and staff. It's absolutely possible for a student and staff member to fall in love. Why not? And I utterly refute any suggestion that a workplace relationship is automatically immoral. There's definitely a new puritanism being enforced nowadays.

Just because some people are arseholes, not everyone is. So you shouldn't be painting entire spheres of social interaction as immoral because some people are bad actors.

In extreme cases, an allegation of sexual harassment may be lodged against the professor even if there was no physical contact simply to get back at the professor for a low grade or if he/she abandons the relationship

Absolutely. These are risks.

However, @Gwadien explicitly said "immoral".

I knew a female professor who started shagging one of her PhD students (who was fifteen years her junior). They got married eventually. No biggie. Is that "immoral"?

Fucking puritanism. And what's weird is that it's a new feature of the snowflake generation - not old people enforcing their "outdated" morality. It's a brand new puritanism because the snowflake generation get hurt feelings and want to legislate that out of existence. And since they've not (yet) got the legislative power (thank fuck) they're hounding people on social media about it.

Well I would say ethically it is wrong for various reasons and therefore should be avoided.

I think that's an oversimplification. I think it's an ethical minefield. But minefields can be and are carefully negotiated. They're not automatically "immoral".

If it's a minefield then avoid the situation....

You're allowed relationships with students so long as they're genuine.

I think it's mental that @Scouse chooses to ignore these people making accusations, not because of what of they're saying, but because of the political situation that we're currently in, and because they don't immediately realise that the situation that they were in was potentially exploitation; fuck all the Saville accusers I guess?

Teacher-student relationships have been a no-no for an extremely long time.

and yes Scouse, I know of lots of teacher-student relationships that were genuine and lasted (look at Macron ffs!) that's the risk you take as the teacher I guess, as it still isn't right. But I absolutely wouldn't take away the right of the student in those relationships to wake up one day and thing 'hang on, this is exploitation.'

This is, of course, the case across all walks of life. But the political atmosphere is making that harder - look at @dysfunction's point above - it's hard, so avoid it.

It's because of a presumption that things can go badly. And of course, they often do. But criminally so? Presumption of abusive?

Nah. I'm not OK with that.

Your ludicrous jump to Jimmy Saville aside - I'm not down with this "always believe the accuser" shite. And absolutely because of this political and cultural situation that we're in. And why? Because it's always nearly always women that are shown as victims - but that's bullshit - women are no better than men.

From Dys's article:
In extreme cases, an allegation of sexual harassment may be lodged against the professor even if there was no physical contact simply to get back at the professor for a low grade or if he/she abandons the relationship
This shit happens. Absolutely it happens.

But I absolutely wouldn't take away the right of the student in those relationships to wake up one day and thing 'hang on, this is exploitation.'
So you have a change of heart and you go from willing participant to victim and suddently everyone must believe you and vilify the other willing participant in a relationship?

Absolutely, people do change their minds. And fair enough. But automatically painting something as exploitative - and accepting that it is now the case because one of the people in the relationship now feels differently - sometimes years later - it's dangerous.

The answer to the question you pose here is if you wake up suddenly thinking you're being exploited - then leave.

Yes. Abuse happens. But it isn't the norm - and it shouldn't be treated as if it is. If people are in a consensual relationship and then it goes south, and someone goes "I was exploited" - then their claims should be treated with skepticism. - and if they really believe it then they should be persuing justice through the criminal courts if they believe a criminal act has taken place.

Anyway @Gwadien:
There's a long history of university staff sleeping with students. Happened all the time whilst I was at Uni. Nobody was bothered. Can you describe what's "immoral" about it?

Exploitation. Coercian. They are immoral. A relationship with a student doesn't necessarily mean either of those things. So they shouldn't be painted as immoral.

I'd argue it's immoral to use primary colours to judge what is an acceptable relationship from the outside. And it's immoral to "believe" every accuser - because of how we know humans act. We often act like little lying shits.

BTW - "teacher / student" - in your case. That's a no. Kids largely don't have the emotional makeup to be able to get into a relationship with an adult on an equal footing. So that's why I agree that your school-age teacher/student relationships are a no-no.

University? Nah. If you have a bad experience with Anal Prof* at Uni then you need to do some kegels, write it off to experience and learn from it.

*boy or girl.

My best mates sister was shagging her teacher from when she was 14 years old. Been married for like 15 years but he is completely controlling and never lets her out etc. Who'd have guessed. Shag someone your own age.

I don't think James Franco was lying about giving them access to the film industry.... in 20 years time when they make a movie about sex abuse in Hollywood, they'll undoubtedly be approached to appear in it.

In all seriousness though, he just abused his position as an actor, he isn't the first and he won't be the last.

Same thing happened to a mate in Cornwall. All leaning on a sea wall waiting for a ferry - seagull swooped down in front of us, we watched it fly off thinking "WTF, why so close?!" - then my mate looked down and all that was left was the bottom 3rd of his cone, cleanly cut - as if by a razor.

You can't be angry at that stuff. It's not the bird's fault after all. We were all very impressed :)

Seagull stole Tam's sausage roll yesterday. Kicked her in the face and flew off with it

"My mother-in-law was lying on the floor of our local pub in a pool of Britvic and chewed cashew nuts. Six men from an oil rig were laying into her hitting her with bar stools. One of my neighbours said "Aren't you going to help?" No. Six of them should be enough."

Fuck China.

The west feeds the beast for their desire for their market though.

Steam will happily make a version which the Chinese Government can control and games companies have been avoiding Chinese no-nos for years.

They did that ages ago
